If you are talking about the drive assembly, you have to remove the starter front housing, it is held by 2 philip screws, the drive assembly portion connected to the reduction gear(idle gear). I have done a similar denso type starter in the past, shouldn't be very hard but you may need impact driver to take the screws off. What's the symptom?
How did your starter clutch go so soon? (that's an assumption on my part)
Damn if I know, if it was a cage the symptom would be described as the starter bendix failing to engage. The starter motor spins but doesn't engage with the flywheel. So far I can bump the starter switch a couple of times and get it to engage but I'm not about to hit the highway till the problem is fixed. [:@]
If the motor spins and the gear does not engage, most likely the drive assembly is busted.
I have seen it fail at 8,000 miles, you never know.
Thanks Alex, now I feel better knowing I got 12,000 out of mine. j/k/
I guess it's time to get out the wrenches and get dirty. It looks like the parts are about $150.
