shifting problem

was riding the other day and when i came to a stop the transmission wouldn't go in to first gear, the lever would go down and i heard the the trans trying to go into gear but wouldn't, i was riding for an hour when this happen, took the bike out today when the bike was cold and it shifted right into gear, I only went around the block this time and it went into first every time. the bike is a 72 sportster right hand shift, also how do you change and check transmission fluid for this bike

sounds like your clutch might be the problem, try adjusting that first. as far as changing oil, there is a drain plug under your primary and you should be able to check it by removing the derby cover...
