Default difficult/clunking gear change after warm up

The problem i am experiencing is when i take off on my 1998 evolution night train the gear change is nice and smooth but after approx half hour of riding. Going up the gears will get that horrible clunk going into 3rd, coming down the gears am finding that at times have to apply to much force to get it out of second into neutral and miss going into first. and then when im in first at the stop sign it will not come out of gear for neutral and if it does to much force has been applied and slips to second again.
When i take off in first from stop sign with the bike moving it slips into second no worries, but get that horibble clunk going into third again
is frustratrating having to mess with the gears when at a stop.
When the bike is turned off the gear change is no worries cold/warm
600kms ago have put fresh redline oil in tranny and fresh HD Gen primary oil, had local dealer adjust clutch for me which required only a minor adjust. And the primary chain adjustment is correct

Just to double check, the fluid is still full correct? No leaks of any kind? Not overfilled either?

How many miles? If you know the shift rod isnt bent it could be a number of other things. The clutch dogs could be worn, especially if the miliage is high, shift return spring could be bent or more likely broken, shift forks could be sprung also, hell its possible the clutch wasnt adjusted right or possible that the transmission is too thick if your riding in cold weather.

From what you desribe, I would re adjust the clutch again, doesn't sound like it was done correctly the last time.

You said "When the bike is turned off the gear change is no worries cold/warm ", this kind of bears it out. Make sure to do the adjustment cold and not warmed up at all.

Cheers Guys,
You know what the dealership done clutch adjust as soon as i rode into shop so it was warm, why would it make any difference though.
The clutch lever hasnt got any slack in it

Theres no oil leaks and not overfilled but will re check it anyway, but get this i should have thought of it earlier when i bought the bike it had 36000kms on it now it has 56000kms, and the gear change was all good.
But i rememeber a whisper mentioned that before the sale the bike was serviced and that the primary was left dry (forgetful fool) bet he was stoned.
Anyway they said that it had a new primary chain fitted before sale, and i bet it did as the original would have stretched and started clanging against primary case and they couldnt have sold it in that state.
Sorry i didnt think of it earlier, may help with a diagnosis
The bike is ridden between 25 and 40 celsius not sure what that is in fahreinheit
Cheers
Keith

The adjustment must be done on a cold engine because of the expansion of various parts as they warm up.

I think if you readjust it on a cold engine , your problem would be gone.

To check this out, open up your dirby cover and turn the clutch adjustment screw about 1/8 of a turn clockwise (in) and go ride it to see if it made a difference.

I'll also bet that your clutch lever is now grabbing pretty close up to the bars too since the dealer adjusted it.

Cheers Lester
makes sense dont it, the gear change is smooth at initial fire up then becomes difficult once warmed up so you would get a more acurate adjustment whilst cold.
Im not gonna muck around with it will get dealer to do it cold and chat to him about it also.
never charged me last time Good Bloke
