Default Transmission double-clunk

My Sport Glide transmission is fairly clunky, definitely louder than my old '15 RK. I don't really mind it all that much, and I'm hoping that once I change my own fluids, it will quiet down some.

I did notice one thing today though. Riding cold, going from 1st to 2nd at low RPM, I hear the shift-into-2nd clunk, but then when I release the clutch I hear another clunk as the drivetrain slack gets picked up. I have to really feather the clutch to not hear that. Is that normal and I just have to adjust how I release clutch/apply throttle, or something that I should be concerned with? I'm not the paranoid type, just want to nip any potential issues in the butt before they become issues...

Mine shifts a bit clunky or stiff until it warms up. I attribute it to clutch drag due to cold thick primary oil.

Hmm, so if I put the new fancy HD Heavy Gear Oil in the primary and transmission, it might actually make it worse cold than SYN3?

Heavy oil will make your clutch drag.
In shifting from first to second, keep in mind this is the largest jump in gear spacing on all motorcycles. What that means is the gear dogs will be going different speeds when you make the shift because first to second are so far apart numerically. It is helpful to make this shift fast and positively. Sometimes fanning the clutch instead of pulling it to the grip will make a smoother shift. There is a reason so many motorcycles pop out of second gear, damaged gear dogs from sloppy slow shifting.

I have to admit, I'm more used to sportbikes, as I grew up riding them, and even racing for a while. This is now my 4th Harley, I had a Road King, and two V-Rods, but it's the first time I'm having to really adjust how I shift. I am getting used to it though, rode in some traffic today on my commute, and can definitely feel I'm getting used to it. Just a little different than my Kawasaki next to it, with a quick shifter and one/two-finger clutch

On the topic of the new HD trans/primary oil, this appears to be a replacement or addition to Formula+. I used Formula+ in the RK, so I was thinking of trying something else besides SYN3 in all 3 holes, just to quiet things down if nothing else. That being said, since I can notice an improvement in just one day of practice, this might just come down to being more accustomed to it. I'll definitely give it more time before messing with changing any fluids.

Another thing worth mentioning is that your other bikes, except the RoadKing, have lighter smaller drivetrains that are probably going to shift with less effort. I will say that my 2018 Softail shifts really well. It is a little stiff shifting untill the engine gets up to operating temperature, but then it's like butter. If you feel like yours isn't right, maybe you could take it to the dealer and take out another bike to see how it shifts. If it isn't working right, it won't get better with miles.
