Default Drive belt breaking

After reading many problems concerning problems with belts, I hope someone can help. I have a 03 classic and have now had 2 belts break on me. I don't ride hard so that should not be a factor. Both times the belt broke were identicle. Shifting from 1st to second gear belt breaks clean with no sign of any other damage. Both times I thought i missed a gear. Easy take off not getting on it at all. The last belt only had 10,000. Any ideas anyone.

Have you checked the alignment of the rear tire? If the rear tire is misaligned, that could cause the belt to wear prematurely.

Do you have a gravel driveway?
Were you able to tell the relative cause of the break? Did it wear from the side, did it have holes in it, etc...

Hi thanks for the replys. No gravel driveway and haven't been riding on any gravel roads. The breaks were both clean with no sign of wear. This last break though, about 2 ft from the break had a corner of 2 teeth smashed down. Looked as though it may have happened after the break but not for sure on this. The last break cost $600 to replace the belt so I would like to get this resolved before I go further. Thanks again for the replys.

My 2 Cents is, I would have the shop check the tenion on the belt with your weight, the manual calls for someone to be setting on the bike when the belt is adjusted. Someshops will adjusted the belt a little tighter thinking the belt is going to lossen up over time. I would have them adjust the belt properly and take it back in 500 mile and re-adjust the belt. Also have them check the pullys for any sharp edges that maybe cutting the belt.

The polychain doesn't simply give up. Perhaps you are overtensioning the belt which is common
or the belt was mis-handled prior to installation. These belts should never be bent backwards or kinked. This definitly will shorten their life expectancy. A good item to remember, If it isn't ratcheting it's not too loose. Phil Ross

When you replace the belt, make sure that both sprockets are replaced as well. Follow the other advice listed above too.
