Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have an 02' Classic that has a pretty good leak at the transmission gasket. I happen to have a new rear tire replaced yesterday and the tech at the shop quoted me $500 to do the gasket replacement, stating that it is a 5-hr job given the part of the primary side has to be disassembled too.
Is there an easier way to do this such that a backyard mechanic can do this on his own?? I only need to replace the gasket!!
If you are talking about the gasket underneath the trap door on the right side of the transmission, 5 hours seems about right.
To remove the trap door on the transmission, the entire primary, clutch, front pulley and mainshaft bearing inner race must be removed.
The reason for this is that the gearset is mounted on the trap door and it comes out as a unit.
Are you sure it is not the gasket on the outer (chrome) cover on the right side? If that is all it is, you can do it yourself without any special tools.
