Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
I have an ’83 FLHS with only 9k on it. Garaged, one owner that just wasnt ridden. The clutch pull is about 10x that of any other HD clutch I’ve pulled. From start to finish, it never changes. Shifts fine, neutral, on/off, no difference. Could this just be a bad cable? I suspect a broken strand causing the added pressure. If so, who has the better - HD, Barnett or Magnum.
A frayed cable is the most obvious issue. I replaced mine with the stock Harley. If you keep them lubricated they last forever.
Another issue might be possibly rusted areas where the mechanisms pivot, or it may need a re-adjustment. There are several ways to have it "out of adjustment" but still have a seemingly correct release / engage points.
You could even have a damaged throwout bearing that's creating a drag before it blow (breaks up) completely.
Start by baking off the cable and feeling how it slides without the tension from the clutch mechanisms.
