Primary/Transmission/Driveline/ClutchFind answers to general powertrain, primary and transmission. Have clutch issues and need suggestions? Post them here.
Need some help here - I was changing the chaincase oil when I found metal shavings on the drain plug magnet. I pulled the primary cover and three objects fell out. I do not recognize them and can not figure out where they would go. I am not the original owner of the bike thus, unsure of previous maintenance. Attaching some pictures. There are two metal parts and one rubber bushing.
So, I pulled the clutch plates to see if anything was missing from inside the clutch housing. I'm beginning to think that these parts are foreign. While I had the clutch plates off, I rotated the inner "splined" assembly and noticed that the outer hub (watching the chain) is warped. The chain tightens and slackens during a full 360 degree rotation. Not a lot, just noticeable.
Upon closer inspection, it seems that these "objects" have made it around the block a few times as there is damage to the clutch housing between the flywheel and chain.
So, a follow up question: do I need to panic and replace the clutch assembly? The reason I ask is because I am heading out for a 2K ride.
There will be some wobble between the clutch hub and the outer shell. Looks weird but normal.
The way foreign parts get into place like this is often due to working on the machine in a cluttered disorganized work area. Always cover parts that are not being worked on.
Thank you ajayak and Dan for taking the time to answer my question.
Makes me kinda sick realizing that I had had such a false sense of security riding with a literal time bomb bouncing around in my primary case. If those had got locked up between the chain and sprocket - bad things could have happened.
Dan, Im glad to hear that some wobble in the clutch is normal - I was afraid that the clutch housing may have been ruined / bent. I did start it up and watched the chain - the upper chain bounces around pretty good.
