Default New guy needs jackshaft help

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forums and relatively new to Harleys (but not new to bikes in general). I've owned, ridden, and worked on a few Honda's over the years and I have helped a few friends work on their Harleys, things like that. I recently ran into a Harley problem tho and was hoping you guys could help me.

My Dad passed away a few months ago from lung cancer and he left me his bike, a custom Evo-powered chopper. He was a hardcore biker his whole life and I'm proud to have his bike and keep the ride alive. Unfortunately I ran into some starter problems (spins but doesn't kick out and engage the engine) and so I pulled the starter and what I think is called the jackshaft. (That was fun, had to pull the primary and clutch basket and all that crap, lol.) The gear on the jackshaft just free spins in both directions so I'm pretty sure this is the problem. The issue I'm having is that I'm not sure what year engine this year (the title says 99 but who knows, the bike is fully custom). None of the jackshafts I've found online look like mine and I don't really have the money to go directly to Harley.

What do you guys think? Anyone know where I can get this part (new) at a decent price? Pic should be below if I uploaded it correctly, lol.

Thanks in advance!

PS. If it'll help to get pics or videos of my engine or any parts, just let me know.

I am not that familiar with the Evo motor but the Twin Cam jackshaft is not an assembly; all the parts can be replaced individually. I would suggest that you visit Ronnies's HD Partsfinder and check out the sheet that shows the jackshaft assembly; you can order the parts you need from Ronnie's, Newcastle, Surdyke or any other online discount dealer. Your best bet is to stick with OEM parts. JMHO

Thanks much for the help. Yeah I was able to get just the starter drive gear off and order that. Come to find out this jackshaft and starter gear are actually off something like an older shovelhead I think. The starter gear I ordered is part number 31443-65A. It fits all shovelheads, plus 67-80 XL sportsters, 65 panheads, and 84-88 evo's. So somebody was in my Dad's bike swapping stuff around at some point and he forgot to mention that to me, lol. But anyway, I'll be putting it back together tonight and I'll be riding by tomorrow hopefully!

Thanks again!

Came in late, but yes early EVO ~1985 starter system. You probably only need the bendix.
