It's not exactly a "road trip" since I flew to California. But while I was there, I rented a bike and my wife and I rode down the Pacific Coast Highway through Big Sur. We lucked out for the most part with the "marine layer" (what we easterners would just call "fog.") Thought I would share a few photos:
I used to live in central CA, and worked out of an office in San Jose for a while, and was stationed at Fort Ord, just north of Monterey. I've been down PCH many times. Gorgeous, gorgeous views.
How was your rental experience? I debated renting in Hawaii a few years ago and the reviews were terrifying.
Great pics and place to ride!
The rental experience was smooth and problem free. I used a company called California Motorcycle Adventures in Mountain View. They rent Harleys, Hondas and BMWs. They have some discount bikes. My own bike is 2011 Road King Classic and they happened to have a 2011 Road King (with a 103 and security) which they were renting at a discount (since it was one of their older bikes) so it was only $99 for the day. I reserved that so I wouldn't have to adjust. The bike was in great shape. They did a thorough check out with me before I left. It was in great shape--brakes, motor and transmission. The rental was for 24 hours and I took it back the next morning.
Those beach shots...can you walk down to those beaches or are they privately owned or inaccessible?
You can walk down to some of them (and we did). Some are surrounded by cliffs which would make getting to them more difficult. But I think they are all technically public.
