Default what GPS??

I did a search and found little info and I know I have read a few threads here about it but I am looking to upgrade from my current Garmin Gps.

the issue

I like to add my own route maybe the entire trip into the gps and not worry just wake up and turn it on....with that said I been told that I can use bascamp and load the trip to my gps well that has not worked and Basecamp is real stiff to use

does the HD zumo use bascamp or do they have a easier program to work with? is the zumo worth it??

I have got a trip to load on my gps but when i go to it the route just changes to what the way the gps wants me to go not the way I planed.

do any of you use a cheaper gps that you can add your own route?

799$ for the harley one yikes???

I'm exploring options too. I have found that the Tomtom rider series won't change your routes. My issue is the bulk of the Tomtom and I heard it has a learning curve...

Tom Tom too big for the way I have it mounted. i use the suction cup mount on the RPM gauge and tuck the power cord in the hole for handle bars, i don't use the Gps much day to day just a few times a year when we get out on trips

really hate to put a permanent mount on....the search continues

i wounder if the tyre-pro will work with the garmin

I believe tyre pro will work with Garmin but maybe someone else can confirm. My big issue with Garmin is that unless you have waypoints stacked up along the way, it will recalculate and drastically throw you off of your route if you have to detour off route for one reason or another. It might change the entire route (until the next waypoint). It can be very frustrating.

What model Garmin do you have? To use Basecamp effectively you need a Garmin that has a custom routes feature. Something that they took out of the newer models and the cheaper models never had it.

I have a Garmin 1490. I like it. It has a 5 inch screen and the map route I create in Basecamp transfers over to the unit exactly how I created it. Basecamp is nice because it has the exact map on your computer that your GPS has so it will be the most accurate. I have used Tyre and TomTom as well in the past. I noticed that since Tyre uses Google Maps, the route didn't always transfer exactly how I create it in Tyre which bugged me. I think taking the time to learn Basecamp and a Garmin with a custom route option outshines any other combo when it comes to custom routes on a GPS.

You can't find a 1490 new any longer but they do have them on eBay for relatively cheap. Here is a link.

Basecamp is a unique creature. I highly suggest doing simple route where you live and route something out maybe 10-20 miles. That way you can drag the route the way you want it with familiar roads. The 3 "options" are using waypoints you actually put in or over ride with a Shaping point (drag the route) or use a point of interest. It does take a lot of clicking but I have had problem with the route showing up sometimes.. I usually have google maps open in satellite mode because when I plan a 4000+ mile trip it's to specific places. Your allowed up to 500 waypoints per route too. Garmin Basecamp support is good also. I've broken down the route to segments but this year I'm going to make it one route. Always put the route on a data card as a backup to take with you.
I have a Zumo 450 which is starting to fall behind as far a memory capacity.

Not going to lie it can be frustrating...or go to zumoforums.com a lot of info there....
