I'm not trying to make your choice for you, but I plugged in July 12 at Booking.com, Hotels.com
and Venere.com (a European search engine) and got La Fonda for $189 on all of them.
Prices at hyper-popular destinations like Santa Fe are very date-dependent. Play around a bit
and see what you come up with. You've got time.. you'll find a place within your budget..
Mike, i was going directly to their websites and not using any of the sites like you mention just to get an idea about what we were looking at. Also ( and i don't know why they are like this) all those fancy motels in the downtown area have charges they add to the price of the motel. some as high as $40 or so. so that $189 turns into $230+ after taxes and all... then you add $20 to park. and you see how it turns into $300 for a shower and a nights sleep.
thanks for your help... I'm still trying to decide what we are going to do..
Here's a B&B we stayed at a couple years ago when we wanted a "stay-cation". Friends have
also stayed there and really liked it. There is parking behind the building and it *should* be
pretty secure in that neighborhood. The plaza is about a 10 minute walk away...
You guys are scaring me. My wife and I are suppose to ride from Indiana to Sante Fe in July 2016 for the Motor Maids convention. Is Sante Fe really that bad?

Santa Fe is not bad at all. The high motel prices you are seeing here are for motels that are downtown near the plaza and most are 4 star. There are very reasonable places to stay in in Santa Fe, they are just not going to be within walking distance of some of the places you want to see. This will require you to ride and find some place to park. If you are staying in Santa Fe for a couple of days, just don't stay downtown. Take one day to ride to the plaza, see what's there and then do other things for the rest of your stay. You should be able to see all the plaza has to offer in one day and there are a lot of other things in the area to do and places to ride.

Like any city, especially a capital city, Santa Fe has some parts of town that aren't great. Just stick to the touristy area and you'll have no problems.
That said, my BIL lived there with my sis and kids. He pissed a guy off on a motorcycle and the guy popped him in the face through his open window and rode off. My guess is he had it coming.
When staying and Santa Fe, I recommend ponying up the extra cash for nice digs. It's worth it to be able to park the bike and walk. Santa FE has a lot of steep driveways and roads so it's not super bike friendly. And the people drive like they're insane. It seems like the Range Rovers and Priuses that dominate the area only have an on and off switch - it's all or nothing.
I did a ride report that includes our time there -

Nevada72 has nailed it. If you are spending a single night there and have only an afternoon and evening
to tour around the unique parts of the city, i.e. near the Plaza, then you'll get more bang for your
buck staying where you want to tour than spending a couple hours commuting back and forth
to an outlying motel. If you have 2 or 3 days to spend, then the trade-off is completely different.
Nellybelle, Look at "The lodge at Sante Fe". Its just north of the Plaza like 1.8 miles if i remember right. Not close enough to ride, but pretty close and it goes for like $100 vs the $200-/$300 of the nice digs in the Plaza area.
Thank you Everyone for your input. I am not sure what host hotel is for the Motor Maids but they normally pick one with parking for a few hundred motorcycles.
I will know more in the spring when they announce which hotel it is. Thanks again.
