I guess this depends on who you are and where you are.

Personally, I think I may have reached the age where camping is no longer an option, but my choice would be a tent as opposed to a sleeping bag or a hammock.

I'd much rather sleep inside of a tent that provides some protection from rain, wind, dew and insects, even if it means a sore back from laying on the ground.

Tent also provides privacy for changing clothing, etc.
IMO, the two biggest shortcomings of using most tents is the set-up hassle (especially if you have to do it by yourself), and in my case, them being too low for me to stand upright while dressing.
If you decide to get a tent, be sure to search for one that will meet your needs.

I have a son that is all into the Hammock kind of thing. Myself I'd take a tent.

Depends on when and where. Bad thing about tents is like said, can't stand up. But nice for bugs and weather like also said.

a fly/tarp over the hammock is easy.. and very effective. I have ran the hammock from back of bike to a picnic table before. Jus saying. Depends on where you are. Easy where there are lot of trees. Some areas and campgrounds say no to hangers as well.... claim tree damage

you do give up the changing room/privacy. Everyone can't handle hanging in a hammock. Try it first if you haven't. From the comfort perspective and ease... I say hang it
