OK, I have everything set for departing on Saturday (May 2, 2014) to visit Eastern Arizona. I have been watching the weather and it looks like it is still hitting the mid-high 30's in Alpine, AZ.
Anybody heard of any weather related road closures on 191, 180, or the general area?
Don't hesitate to take the time to ride US 191 both north and south. Kind of like two different amazing rides.
US191 from Alpine south to the Morenci area is a beautiful ride. Slow going in some spots due to tight turns. One thing...no services on that road between those two towns (probably 100 miles or so), so be sure to have a full tank before heading out! Watch out for Elk!

None that I know of, but keep in mind that the Alpine area is well over 8000 feet, as is most of US191. It can get cold up there at night and early morning at this time of year. I live in Mesa and it can be in the 90's here and in the low 60's up there during the daytime!
Weather should be awesome in the North country this weekend. It could be chilly in the mornings; temps in the desert will be approaching 100 though. Be prepared.
Personally, I prefer Hannigan Meadow to Alpine for a place to stay. The Big Bear Restaurant in Alpine is where I eat in that part of the world.
Not much to add in terms of rides. This time of year in AZ is basically the best there is. Will be hard to pick a bad ride.
Depending on how far north you want to go... I really like Holbrook (stay at the Wigwam), the Painted Desert (see it in the early morning or at sunset), and the Petrified Forest (lots of places where you can pick up a momento: I like book ends :-) )
