On multi day trips I bring my laptop. At the end of each day I create a folder for that day with the date as the folder name and upload the pics to that folder. I can rename/reorder the pictures and clear my GoPro memory card in prep for the next day.

I only once had a problem with something obscuring the lens, and that was the result of some bird poop. Not a pretty sight.

I think most late model digi cams have the option of automatically naming your photos with the date and time.

Of course the tip about taking pics of signs is a really good way to jog your memory later.

Been there done that. Now I have Data Recovery Pro that recovers deleted pictures. I think I paid $49.95 for it and there are probably other ways to do it but $49.95 was a lot cheaper than going out of state to retake the pictures I deleted by mistake. It's available here

Good thread. Shopping for a new point-and-shoot now that has GPS. If the iPhone can do it, I want my more expensive cameras to do it. Already bought a new DSLR body. Anybody have a good point-and-shoot that geotags?

On the GoPro, I also dump the cars into a folder at the end of each day. And I often have issues with dust or bugs to the lens. Just bought some peel-off lens covers I'm gonna try this summer, and I've learned to keep eye-glass wipes in my pocket. Nothing like video with a dead bug flapping around...

On my point n shoots I always look for a camera that will use AA's I can always keep a set or find a gas station that sells them. I find it cheaper and easier than an extra battery and charger.

I use to carry a lap top with me on long rides but the lap top died and I now use an iPad so the following will no longer work, but it has worked for years.

I used a point and shoot camera. Each night I downloaded the pics to my laptop into a labeled and dated folder. But one of my riding buddies usually keeps an ongoing blog online of our rides, including pics. He updates this every night so friend and relatives can see what's happening. So each night after I downloaded the pics, I would put them on a thumb drive and give him the thumb drive so he could use whichever of my pics he wanted.

What has happened is that I have a thumb drive with all the pics from my long rides for the last five years in one place. When I get home from one of these rides, I transfer the pics from the thumb drive to my home computer, but I don't erase the pics from the thumb drive. So the pics are all in several places.

Now that I have an iPad, this won't work any longer. I think I might start using the camera in my iPhone more so it will automatically download the pics to my iPad and my home computer from the cloud. I'll then email the pics my friend wants so he can use them in his blogs.

I use all Apple, iMac, iPad and iPhone. More and more I am liking the photos the iPhone takes, and they just seem to get better with every release. However I still haul around my Canon DSLR with it's stock 18-55 lens as well as a 70-300 telephoto lens when I want to get serious. I may change to a smaller point and shoot some day to conserve space.

While on trips I always use my iPhone with it's GPS tagging capabilities. It also makes it easy to post quick pics and notes to an Apple Shared Photo Stream which I let friends and family follow so they know where I am. I'll take a photo of signs or other notable locations with the iPhone, even if I don't pull out the Canon. Once I get home all photos are imported from both camera and iPhone and put into the same Event in iPhoto. The time stamp organizes the photos by time from both sources.

Not really necessary but I will copy the GEO location from the iPhone photos into the canon photos. Apples iPhoto has a map feature you can see thumbnails of photos you have taken along your route. Copying the locations to the Canons photos will include them in with the ones shown on the map. A great way to re-live a trip during the long winter months.

Wow! I'm impressed with all the techno stuff some of you take along. I have one of the first Sony A100 DSLR's with an 18-200 lens...picture quality is stunning; I can make posters with this unit. After the trip I will photoshop a bit if required to "clean up" a picture or fix contrast. Phone pic's are good for Facebooking back to those who can't travel but that's it for my iPhone. I now have a Go Pro and need to figure out how to use it before the first major trip, as well as sync it with my iPad for viewing on the road...major challenges for me. So many times I'd like to take a pic while rolling, or simply can't stop safely; I hope it works for me.

On our trip out west I had the Go Pro set to take video each day. One day I must have inadvertently hit the 'take a photo every minute' selection. I didn't notice until half way through the day. That night I had over 3000 pictures, all one minute apart, to go through. It did make for some interesting sequences though. lol

At home I have an external 4 TB drive that I load all my pictures up to.

I also never delete anything from the camera until I confirm that I've successfully copied them to the external drive.

Here is a great little gadget if you're the type that don't like the idea of bringing a laptop or a tablet. It lets you transfer photos, music or files between iOS devices and an SD Card or a USB HDD. You can also move files between the SD card and an attached USB drive. It also has a 6000 mAh battery with the capabilities for charging smartphones.
