Just reading your post brought back the horror of my navigational Phuckup last year. I did a tour of Canada, then the Great River road, then home cross country on Rt. 50.
Heading east on 50 from Indiana I saw the sign 275, Kentucky, turn right. I was still quite a ways from Ohio so I kept on going. BIG mistake. Rt. 50 in Cincinnati during the day sucks big time. And I was stuck on it.
Route your exits in magic markers and tape the paper to your tank, at least near big cities.

I was eyeing up rt 1 to hwy 50 thru town but it looked like a bunch streetlights down town area...
