I prefer to ride Iron Mountain road from south to north. Going north you're able to see Mount Rushmore through the tunnels as you go through them. A trip out to the Badlands may be worthwhile for you. Some people like the Badlands, others not so much. We've cut down through them on our way back east after the Rally and made a shorter first day heading home.
Staying off the slab, we go through Lead almost everyday. You mite try the SD tourism site and request a vacation planner. There is a map that shows the roads/routes that you can use as a guide. The maps are everywhere out there pick one up and go. Or use this link and you can download a Black Hills riding map. http://www.southdakotarides.com/inte...ingmap/mappdf/
We take one of these maps with us on the bike and use it to get around every year.

This is a great idea as the guy that designed the roads laid out the tunnels so they frame Mt. Rushmore in them as you go through.
Also the Rapid City HD has a HUGE parking and vender area where you can purchase and have things installed on the spot, plus a big tent area for discounted clothing and such.
Not trying to hijack here but is there an of the sights a person should try to avoid during the rally? When I do go I'll most likely going to be there for awhile before the rally, then couple of days during.
Staying at Custer Widlife Lodge...form there out to
Baddlands
Keystone, Custer, Needles Hwy, Deadwood
Vanocker Canyon, Spearfish Canyon Sturgis, Rapid City
Then on to Red Lodge, MO ; Beartooth, Chief Josephy Skyway, Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, Jackson Hole, WY, Grand Junction, Durango, CO, Madrid and Santa Fe, NM..
then home
