Default First trip to Yellowstone area

So we are just starting to put plans together for a trip heading west to eventually getting to the Yellowstone area. My question is how much trouble will I have finding a hotel if I don't book it ahead of time? At the moment I am thinking of staying up around Billings though it is a bit of a drive to the park. Hoping to keep under $100 a night because we don't need anything fancy. Any advice for the area is appreciated.

Well you will have a blast. There is construction by Old Faithful on the lower loop road. Be patient . It is a great experience on a bike.

I stayed in Billings last year on my way to Glacier with no reservations. It was like a Super 8 and it was like $120 or 140. The last room they had.

I would think most of your time will be spent getting to the park and back. JMO

That is what I was thinking too. I guess that was part of my question too. If anybody could suggest a town a bit closer? Billings looked like a one of the bigger cities in the area. I should say this trip is going to be for our 20 year anniversary so it will be in two years. Just getting ideas together now

I stayed in Cody one night year before last at the Irma Hotel. I don't remember, but I did not think it was that high. You might find cheaper rooms there. It is a big tourist area. Red Lodge might be an option, West Yellowstone.

I have stayed in West Yellowstone twice. Reservations recommended and $100/day ain't gonna happen. Location of West Yellowstone is a big plus. Red Lodge is a really interesting town as is Cody. Irma Hotel in Cody is a perfect location. Food and drinks at the Irma.

Cody (East), West Yellowstone (West) and Jackson (South) are your best bets. Close to the park entrances.

Do NOT go without reservations, it will turn into the trip from hell. You will either wind up in the worst motel ever, or pay through the nose.

That said, well worth the effort and planning, amazing part of this country.

Driggs, Ashton and Island park are all good choices and close to the park. Scenic rides to the park. I live in Driggs and go to the park often. There is a Super 8 here and a couple other motels. Just a thought.
