Default First Leg of our Summer Trip

We got back home this afternoon after the first leg of our summer trip. We left Wisconsin on July 2 and visited our daughter in South Carolina for the 4th. Then went to Nova Scotia and visited some friends we haven't seen there for several years.

Our new (to us) '89 Electra Glide performed flawlessly. Since we have a butterfly carb our bike doesn't like regular gas with ethanol in it. It would have to be re-jetted because it runs too lean on the midrange. We kept track of our fuel receipts for the trip. Some places we couldn't get 91 octane premium with no ethanol so had to fill up with 10% ethanol premium. With that stuff in the tank the engine is a bit "surgey" riding thru towns at slower speed. On the open road it's OK. On the fillups with ethanol gas our mileage averaged 50.2 mpg. When we could get real gas our Evo with 70,000 miles on it gets 51.5 mpg. We mostly ran 60 mph on the open road, which was a nice comfortable pace, and we were in no hurry - 4,890 miles in the last 10 days.

The previous owner of our bike ran 15W-40 Shell Rotella diesel oil in it since new, so that's what we're running in it. It only used about a pint of oil on this leg of the trip. The oil temp runs about 160-170 on the open road, even at 95 degrees in SC. Lots of idling in traffic in town gets it up to 180-190. But it holds 15 psi of oil pressure at idle with the oil hot, which I guess is pretty normal for Evo's. We got a new oil pressure sender and it was checked with a regular hydraulic gauge when I put the new sender on, so I know the dash gauge is accurate.

Have to change engine and primary oil tomorrow, then we're leaving for Alaska on Monday. Catching Sturgis on the way home in early August.

Thoroughly enjoying our 29 year old "Classic" Harley. It's the best and most comfortable two-up touring bike we've ever owned (previously Goldwing riders)!
