Default Recommendations for PA roads heading N/S

I know Geezr and a few others have posted PA info in the past but what I am hoping to do is narrow down some options for two different trips.

First trip is from NH to York/Hershey. I am thinking of either heading down Rt 22 or Taconic Pkway in NY to 84 and then to 81 to only burn a day on the way down but am looking for a PA dutch scenic route home from the Hershey area through mid/eastern PA. Plan would be one night stay in PA or just above it.

Second trip would attempt to circumvent (slightly to the west of) Rt 81 as we head down to WV. I think we will stay in the Catskills and pass through PA and possibly stay in very southern PA or Berkley Springs area of WV. Need a good Southern route to go Catskills to Berkley.
On the way home we will want to come out of WV in the same general area but might want to head towar Rt 144/44 then onto 6 East as we traverse home.

Any thoughts or suggestions are welcomed. We may try for something in the NW sector of PA if we head out west but these two are definitely planned.

Thanks!!!!

Hi Rossn,

I could give that a shot for trip one south. How is the Albany area and 87 as a ride? I am city adverse but if it is a quick in and out and 87 is a decent ride that would be cool (riding along the west bank of the Hudson). My biggest concern with the one shot deal for trip one is traffic jams on 84 and particularly on 81 as there was a 5-10 mile (seemed like 40) single lane funnel near Ravine last fall. Got to catch that baby in hard rain while doing about 20. Not sure what time is good for 81 but it is about 2.5 hours of riding for the trip if traffic is flowing.

irider,

219 looks interesting, maybe to Route 80 then a quick 30 min of slab to 144/44 (heads me at a NE/SW slant which is what I want to accomplish). Looks like 220 becomes 99, then back to 220 up north (or am I misinterpreting the map) is that a decent ride once it does? Not opposed to a new bit of slab if it is not a horror show of traffic.

15 looks real nice along the river. How are ride speeds on that? Love riding along rivers but often they are slower rides. That may be my pick coming back from Hershey/York unless there are other great rides east of 81 (I think that is PA dutch country but not sure how much or far).

Thanks for the inputs folks, keep em coming

Dave

Taconic parallels 87 and is way more fun to ride then 87. Taconic has turns and short up and downs. 87 is a slab. If Taconic keep it below 75mph more like 72max. Troopers all over the place.

For your first trip on the way home try 15 north to 147 north then 209. 209 is a decent rural road through some small towns that will take you in the direction you need to go.

You can't go wrong with 144/44 and route 6 all great roads

Will do on that speed BigWaterJim. I will probably pick up Taconic just south of Austerlitz then.

Ultrarider, they sound good. I have actually done 209 from Mattamoras to Tremont (then I think 125 to Ravine out to 81) That was good riding, especially from Ravine out past Jim Thorpe, gets a little touristy around the bottom of the gap and Rte 80 area but definitely an option.

Thanks for the continued inputs folks!! I am really thinking a ride on Rt 15 along the river then cutting NE to 6 might be cool for return of trip one. Probably first week of May while Hershey is open full time and also bag the Steel Toe tour which most everyone says is a must.

Hi Dave. Amish country down around Lancaster, is south of Hershey. Out of the way & congested with tourists like you wouldn't believe. It's not fun. Map this one out. This'll be a good one for a ride through some nice Amish country on the way back. Work your way over to Carlisle, and go up 74, to 75, to 22 west for a mile. Then 35 to 235 to 522 to Selinsgrove, and pick up 15 again. Up in Allenwood, you can get 44 north, or you can stay on 15, and 15's a nice ride all the way to Corning NY. OR, 15 to 80, 80 east for a mile to 180 west, to 220 north. 220 North's a great ride all the way to 17/86 near Waverly NY.

Can't help you with a nice route from Catskills to Berkeley Springs. I don't think there IS one! Might as well put up with it, get there, and do the nice ride after Berkeley Springs. Interstate 68 is a beautiful ride. 68 to 40 to 219 all the way up to Dubois. At Dubois, you should get 255 to 555 to Benezette to see if the elk are out. From there, 555 to 120 east to 872 north to 6 near Coudersport. A little out of the way is 68 to 40, go past 219 to 381 to Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater house. From there you can go to Somerset, and take the turnpike east for an exit or 2 back to 219.

Sounds like a lot, but map it out, and it's really not bad. Hope it helps.

Thanks Geezr. Just got back from FL and found 7" fresh inches of snow so I will map it out tomorrow. I like the fact that we can blend with 15 so that should be interesting to map.
