Default Trip to the Dragons Tail

Planning a 10 day excursion down to the Dragons Tail in Sept. Looking for not so well know points of interest and places to eat and back roads don't care for taking interstates the whole way. Any local help and inside info.

Thanks,

When I go to that area from IL, I like to go straight to Tellico Plains, TN and take the Cherahola skyway over to Robbinsville,NC. Then up 129 to Deal's Gap to run the dragon back into Tn. At the end of the dragon, I turn around and go back to Deal's Gap and take 28 south. I like to take the little detour off 28 to go to Fontanna dam. Then I head south on 28 for as long as I feel like it and eventually head over to Maggie Valley for the night.

From there I usually go to Cherokee NC and get on the brp and head up to at least Mt. Mitchell State Park. You really can't go wrong in that area. Just north of Asheville, I like to leave the brp and ride NC 80 at least ten miles each direction from the brp.

This is the first spring in many years I haven't done that trip. I find a new road and something great every time I go to that area.

One other thing to mention, if adult beverages are important to you, you might want to consider packing a few with you. It is easy to find yourself an hours ride away from a place to get a drink in that part of the country.

Dennis

edited to add: If you haven't visited tailofthedragon.com you need to. Lots of good info there about the area, rides and almost anything else you want to know about the area.

Nice to know my son who is 28 and my wife will be coming along so with three baggers we should have a little room to bring some with. I have went to the site and checked it out just a lot of area between here and there just looking for the hidden spots that only the locals know about. This will be the first long trip that my son and I have taken together, looking to have a great time.

Thanks, Dave

I recommend checking out the Devils Triangle in Tennessee. It is more challenging then the Dragon and way less traffic. It is not as marketed but a very good ride. It will make the Dragon seem like a walk in the park but do be careful.

Lots of cool waterfalls in the area. Did a tour of them last time I stayed in Maggie Valley for a few days. Great local hotel there. Wheels Thru Time museum. Take your swim suits, pool at the hotel and some of the water falls you can jump in and cool down.

As long as you aren't on a divided 4 lane the road will be good! Head a direction and enjoy the ride.

If you leave Fontana dam, take 28 south all the way to Franklin, then go just west of town on old Murphy rd. Then take 1310 i think... It's called Wayah rd, stop mid way in Aquone At Lakes end rentals for a nice break and lunch... You can thank me later, it's a loop worth taking, nice 55 mph curves and sweepers, couple waterfalls... You can also go further south on 28 but I like to come back in Wayah rd.. One of those hidden gem... Look at it on google maps or google earth.
