Thinking about taking a trip up to Maine next year, for about a week. What are some good places to see on a bike, and what are the not to miss places to see. Not sure if I will be hugging the coast or going inland. Thanks for all the great info that will be coming in.
I suggest the coast from Portsmouth NH on up. There is traffic in summer but I think it's worth it . A lot of nice beaches and plenty of shopping or seafood. I also highly recommend Bently's Saloon in Arundel.
Definitely check out Bentley's. Weekend nights are a lot of fun. Get a reservation way in advance because they have very few rooms. If you are camping, you will be OK. Check their website. The coast is fantastic except for tourist traffic. Acadia National Park is beautiful. Maine is a vast state, and most of the northern part is still sparsely developed timber tracts for paper companies. If you get a chance, ride Route 2 from Flagstaff Lake area all the way through NH and into Vermont. Fantastic run. Check the web for places to stay that suit your budget. Don't forget the rest of New England, too. Have an awesome trip.
Near Rockland ME is the Keag General Store. It has been there since the 1800's, Walk in and head to the back where they serve the best Lobster Rolls at a reasonable price. I was advised to go to the coastal towns you haven't heard of.
I agree with Fredh, just went last month, came across from Kingston,NY to Rockport,Mass. stayed at Captains Bounty on the beach, then up through Portsmouth to Kennebunkport and stayed at the Colony. York Beach was a nice ride.
YOU'LL LOVE IT stay away from the coast, was too much traffic for us... we spent 3 weeks up there mainly inland. roads are very rough the farther north you go.
if you get a chance go to the most northly point of maine, USA.
As for seeing moose or bear, forget about it.
and yes rt 2 -16- 201 and rt11 north are all nice, very little traffic.
