If you don't have to go the direct way consider looping south and west through the Hill Country and down to Uvalde. From Uvalde on 90 ride through that Trans Pecos country, Big Bend's River Road to Presidio and then Ft. Davis and beyond to Tucson. You won't be disappointed adding a couple extra days.

I didn't see a time of the year that you will be traveling. Warmer weather stick to the mountain areas in NM, if you are traveling when it is cold weather, stick to the southern route. Most people don't realize the elevation is around 3,500 for flat land in NM, and the mountain areas is 5,000 plus. Jim

I have ridden US-60 from the Phoenix area all the way to Canyon, TX (just S of Amarillo) a few times. If you like solitude, that's the ride for you. I have gone 90 minutes or so without seeing another vehicle between Socorro and Clovis NM.
If you want a really good ride, Take US-60 past Socorro, then at Datil take Hwy 12 S to Reserve, then 180 to Alpine, AZ and ride 191 S to Safford. That's the Coronado Trail and it's the best ride in AZ.
