Oregon and New Jersey are the only states you can't pump your own gas.
Be prepared to have someone tell you that but many will let a rider fill his bike but be prepared to not filling on your own. They know bikers are fussy.
My 1st time, I thought they were just being "friendly" when filling the truck.
The top reply isn't completely true. We have to have the attendant pump the gas in a car or truck but when it comes to motorcycles, we can pump our own. Been doing it since I started riding in 1980.

I was down in Oregon several times last year, and once when the gas jockey came out, and took my card, I took the gas cap off and asked him to fuel it up for me. He looked at the bike, and then at me and said "You think I am stupid?"
I plan to ride to The Dalles, Oregon this summer. I will be coming up I-5 from California. I am hoping someone familiar with Oregon can tell me which route would be the best ride:
I-5 to Portland, then E on I-84?
or
Hwy 97 from Yreka CA through La Pine and Bend to The Dalles?
Or ??
From my experience in living in Oregon all my life, the trip up through Portland and then the Columbia Gorge to The Dalles will give you a lot of traffic to navigate through. I grew up in the Western part of Oregon so I am very familiar with the traffic on that side of the state. The other route that you mentioned will have less traffic and more out in the country as compared to the freeway but the roads can be narrow in spots and many times I've been caught behind slow moving vehicles where I've had to take advantage of various ways that were sometimes unsafe to get around the slower moving vehicles. Both are fun, just depends on whether you want less traffic but probably slower in getting there or faster traffic that gets you there sooner. By the way, the route that TwiZted mentioned, I've been that way too and it was fun to see Mt. Shasta because I had never seen it before that trip.

we had a good laugh
Hmm, maybe I'll have to try that sometime and see what they say. In all the riding that I've done in Oregon, from small town to large town, I've never had anybody try to fill my tank, they knew better because in this state, a friend told me that motorcycles and vehicles with custom paint jobs are allowed to fill their own tanks.
We were up through California, Oregon, and Washington a few years ago. If I recall Oregon does not have sales tax. My DW was all excited because she found an I-pad on sale plus she didn't have to pay sales tax.
Coming from AZ, I might consider riding HWY 395 into Oregon and then cut across, it is beautiful in NorCal and southern Oregon. I have traveled it a bunch in my vehicles, on camping trips and traveling. It is on the list for the bike.

Agree, It's my prferred route from SoCal to Oregon. Took it from I-15 to Susanville several times. Beats hell out of the other routes.

I've ridden in OR before, I know all about the gas station attendants. I was just asking which is the best route to The Dalles, starting from I-5 in NorCal. Time is a factor, so the coast is out, but I have ridden the Oregon coast in the past. I need to get from Phoenix to The Dalles in 3 days, max.
