camping near fairfax and riding into DC with Patriot HD for Rolling Thund er...what about the friday and saturday before RIDE into DC to sightsee?? OR grab the subway??? Any parking (cost) near the smithsontian museums....or white house???
We are planning on riding with the Patriot HD to the Pentagon Sunday morning for the run.
My question. When the ride is over is there a way to keep riding or do you have to stop and park with the group? We will be riding to Delaware that same day.
After the ride, you can pull over at the Mall or keep on going. If I ever make the ride again, I will pull off and walk around the Mall for a while. Maybe see Lt. Dan's band play. I was working in Fairfax a couple of years ago and I caught the train into DC. Nice parking area. I caught the train at the western most station which was a few miles east of Fairfax.
If you have an hour and you like guns, visit the NRA headquarters in Fairfax. Awesome museum and it is free. They have some unbelievable stuff there. It is right by the interstate.

The Smithsonian museums are free. If you want to do something in your bike, I'd suggest riding through Rock Creek Park. It's the largest urban park in the country. It's beautiful and has tons of twisties. It basically runs north-south through the center of the city. There are many places to picnic and tons of good restaurants on the west side of the park.
The bottom end of the park is right by the Kennedy Center and not far from the mall.
Like others have said, DC is easy enough to navigate by subway and on foot. We usually stay in the Arlington area and take the subway into DC to sightsee. Check out Fort Washington H-D too the Saturday before the ride, they're the "official dealership of Rolling Thunder" and have a few special appearances, vendors and food.
Do you have base access? I ussually park on the navy yard and then take the train to the national mall. Other times I've been luck to find parking by the Jefferson (Ohio dr SW) parking lots. I live in Annapolis and visit DC frequently, if taking 50 to Delaware wave as u pass exit 22.
Maybe you'll get lucky cruising the mall and can double up on parking with another bike.
