Also can be used in other states, I used mine in Illinois years ago riding to Sturgis. The will send you one for a motorcycle so you pay that fee, not the cage fee. I think some of the Rest Areas sell them, but I would research that in advance. Good luck.
This^^^^^get one.

I'm open to all suggestions on route. Keep in mind that I need to hit every state. Here is the route I currently have planned through the North East states (I'll be traveling from north to south).

I do a solo trip of around 5K miles every September and send a daily email to friends and family letting them know how the day went. I'm thinking of starting a thread here and posting my daily updates.

I just drove from Wash Dc to Maine, avoid NYC.

Take 87N to Newburgh NY the take 84 east through Conneticut, less traffic more pleasant

Get an EZ pass, not only do they send you a bill for the toll, they also include a nice big fine to go with it.

If you must take I95, I would do the bulk of my riding early in the day. I would also avoid any stretch through Connecticut and New York during rush hour, PARTICULARLY on a Friday. That includes any section of I95 feeding into the George Washington Bridge [can we still call it the "George Washington" :-)] from early afternoon through at least 9pm on a Friday. Ride safe and enjoy your trip.

Now lets talk about this ride of yours. Someone else on the Forum did what you are attempting a couple of years ago. There was a very specific route that someone else had devised to minimize mileage while still hitting all 48 states. It was not direct or straight, very zig zag route, but somehow it was the most efficient way to achieve your goal. You should take a look for that map.

I've been is discussion with several guys that did this ride (one did it in 10 days). I've got it down to just over 8K miles (with the detours for Blue Ridge Parkway and the Dragon). Those will be short days plus down time to have the bike serviced during the trip get me to having to average over 500 miles per day. There are many shorter ways to do it if you don't want to return to where you started from but I need to do mine in a loop. My route does zig zag quite a bit.
