Has anyone done this recently? I am planning to hit Pensacola, Mobile, and Houston this summer, from New England. Because it is a long, fairly-boring ride, I am considering skipping DC to FL by taking the Auto Train-which will also let me get a decent night's sleep (I'd get a roomette sleeper) while making about 800 miles. Bike is a 2014 Sporty 1200T.
Anyone done this lately-and anyone done it with a Sporty?
I'm in FL for the winter and some of my snowbird friends use the Auto Train for their cars to go back and forth. They all seem to like it a lot since they do it every year in both directions. I head to WI for the summer so it's not an option for me.
I've had friends take the auto train but it has been a few years. Some liked it and others didn't. I would probably ride and simply find another route to take that went a little more west or hugged the coast and stayed further east.
I ride it one way every March to bike week. Ride other way. Great way to go. Food is like 1st class airline food. Dont be late for loading you will be turned away even 5mins past.
Go business class for more room and quiet.
I leave from CT so to get to Daytona I would have to get a hotel, food, tolls, gas etc. because of short days that time of yr. it works out to cost $60 more to sit back.
I live about 10 miles from the Auto Train Station in Virginia. Used it many times and always work great for me.
Going south, how close to the schedule do they usually run? If the 9am arrival is actually 9:30 or 10:00, no big deal...if it turns into 2pm, it might be.
