Default Glacier Ride

Hi all,

I live 20 miles west of Glacier in Whitefish, MT. My preferred ride is up east over Marias Pass on hwy 2. At East Glacier take hwy 49 over Looking glass pass. Go slow to hwy 89 to St Mary's. Then enter the park and ride to Logan pass. Before the pass there is a great hike to St Mary's & Virginia Falls. Bring water.

In western MT ride cautiously at night, critters every. Good news it stays light late. Lots of good rides this way....goldie

We've stayed in Cut Bank, MT twice and hit the park from the east.
Once through the park we've stayed in Kalispell or Whitefish and the taken either RT 83 or RT 93 SOUTH towards I-90.

Once we took RT 89 north from Vaughn and we also stayed east of the park but I don't remember where we stayed on that trip but it may have been St Mary.

One of he most beautiful rides we've been on. That's why we've gone three times!

I prefer east to west. Your going down hill, against the cliffs which enables you to take in more of the view.

If you're going via St Louis avoid I-70 to KC. Mostly a traffic jam, Truck, Lake of the Ozark Drunks, and poor road conditions.
Take US 61 North out of St Louis
Before you get to Hanible Mo turn west on Paris Gravel Road
Take that to 63 west to St Joseph MO to pick up I-29

US 61 and 63 are mostly interstate quality and much less traveled.
I-70 StL to KC can become a parking lot and a motor killer in the summer.

That'll be awesome. Don't miss Lamar valley. One of the most amazing things I've ever seen, like an American Serengeti. Beartooth will drop you into it, just keep riding.

Funny, we were sitting in a bison jam in Lamar Valley last summer in our teeny little Fiat, which the bulls were admiring amorously. "I'd never ride a motorcycle here," she said. Now she's pestering me to death to take the RK down there this summer. Just born to be wild, I guess. I imagine we will base out of Billings for a week, it's a days' drive from where I'm working and we can cross Beartooth off the list

I've been down 191 a couple of times on the bike, last year we ran the eastern part of the loop in the Fiat and it was really impressive, and seemed to have a lot less traffic. No geothermal features but it's gorgeous. The run down to Jackson is nice.

I seem to be the odd man out here. I prefer the West to East ride at dawn. Arriving Logan Pass near dawn.

First, not many RVs at this time...actually near zero.

Second, overlooks are easy to view. Access is simply to pull off. I no longer take a lot of photos, but thank goodness for digital. I love to stop and just look at the curves below me, especially if there is another motorcycle coming up.

But I do it both ways, depends more on whether I take the northern route east or go through Yellowstone. Always take the alternate route home.

Per this ride, I also prefer Beartooth from the Northwest. While my wife prefers the safer side both rides. However, I ride my ride.

I am disappointed that it has become a fee to ride this year.

We have our 3 day GTS passes for our 2022 Labor day trip.
Will be coming up from Salt Lake City.
Have a night in Victor Idaho reserved.
Looking for a couple overnights before hitting Glacier.
Deer Lodge has been mentioned or we may head over to Cooke City or Red Lodge and do Bear Tooth Pass again.
Have 4 nights in Whitefish reserved.
After that we have 1 week to meander around before we need to be back in SLC.
Thinking of running down through Idaho and seeing the sites.

Whitefish, Missoula, Lolo Pass, Lewiston, Hells Canyon, McCall, Banks & 17 to Stanley Idaho, Galina Pass, craters of the moon… A nice way to spend two days.
