Planning to ride Tamiami Trail on the way south and come back up I-75. Plan to stop at Alabama Jacks on the way to Key Largo from north of Tampa. Any other attractions or spots that we need to see on the way down to KL? Plan to eat at The Fish House that evening.

Since we will now be leaving KL in the morning headed to KW, I plan to stop at Bass Pro Shop. Plan to feed the tarpon at Robbie's.

If you want back roads and less traffic,
Consider :
Find whatever road works best for you SOUTH to
60 EAST to
17 SOUTH towards ARCADIA (Tiny old Florida town, basic breakfast at Wheelers in tiny side screened porch next to sidewalk)
then from Arcadia catch 31 SOUTH to
80 EAST towards Labelle to
29 SOUTH towards Immokale (Consider a 5 mile detour to stop at modern but small Catholic town of Ave Maria to see Catholic church built by Dominoes Pizza founder)
It is a really neat looking church inside/outside and it has a bathroom inside in back right corner. The church looks like the Popes hat.
Easy parking and makes for a nice 15 to 30 minute rest stop. There is ONE gas station in the town.
If you read about the Ave Maria town first, then it makes more sense when you see it..Modern town in the middle of no place and far from civilization.
Then continue on 29 SOUTH going over (alligator alley/ I-75) and you are riding next to the National Preserve to reach 41/Tamiami Trail.
At 29/41 crossing :Now make a decision, lunch at Everglades City on the water about 3 miles ahead or continue riding.
The little town of Everglades City has no traffic lights and no traffic at all.
The small town is the best available place to eat for the next 2 hours.
Everglades City is another place to read about before arriving, almost everyone in the town was arrested in the 1980's (read about it) but do not ask people in town about it.
There is ONE gas station in Everglades City proper and it is a good gas station since it is used to fuel boats.
A rustic good place to eat is CITY SEAFOOD ( 702 Begonia St, Everglades City, FL 34139 ) , It is a counter service (order and they yell your number) type of place on the river so the natural view is nice and you eat food from a basket (food is good) outdoors under covered roof on picnic tables or seated at bench at edge of dock.
It is seafood so it will be about $16 - $18 for food and drink. They have other grilled items too.
Note flood line on wall from past hurricanes.
Small fishing town will give you a better understanding about old Florida living.
Then go back to continue on 41 EAST (several stops on 41 EAST like the smallest post office in the USA, Joanies Blue Crab Cafe (stop for a soda), free Oasis Visitors Center (bathrooms) at 52105 Tamiami Trl E, Ochopee, FL (always has gators in view).
Keep in mind that many areas along this section of 41/Tamiami is indian police patrolled (sovereign territory) and they make the rules (DO NOT SPEED)
If you are interested in an airboat ride then take one on the north side of Tamiami that is indian controlled.
(the one nearest the Value Jet airplane crash memorial is a good one.
The small memorial for Value Jet air plane crash (commercial airplane crashed into Everglades) as you get really close to Krome/997 is a slightly off road viewing area...then
Krome/997 SOUTH until it spits you out at the start of keys.
All the roads suggested are daylight only as they are rural, no drainage, do not have any street lighting and animal encounters are increased at night.
Do NOT speed on 41/Tamiami Trail...If you develop a trail of cars behind you then pullover at next available turn off and let them pass so you can enjoy the scenic ride.

Stop at the Bass Pro shop at mile marker 81 when headed to Robbie's (mile marker 79), parking is easy & free.
The inside of the store is nice, good a/c, has bathrooms in back right corner by aquarium, rocking chairs and the view out back of water is very nice.
