Maybe some of you well-traveled fellow riders could offer some ride suggestions. I am planning a ride from the Hudson, FL area (just North of Tampa) to Helen, GA in mid-June. I prefer to stay away from interstate routes as much as possible. Someone has suggested taking 41 to 441 and then following 441 up to Athens to 129, taking 129 to Hwy. 75 into Helen. Another has suggested getting to 129 in North FL and following it all the way up through GA to Hwy. 75. Anyone by chance taken a 2-wheeled ride to Helen, GA from West Central FL or any of these routes? I would greatly appreciate any information on such ride/routes.
I prefer hwy 441 from Lake city, Fla., 129, 75 to Helen. Once you get around Gainesville its nice riding to Helen, if possible head over to TWO (Two Wheels Only) in Suches,GA. using hwy 180. That area is great riding. Brass Town Bald (highest point in Ga.) is another interesting place to visit. Both are a nice ride from Helen.
I live in east TN , but I have ridden to Helen & ridden down 441 to FL many times .
441 is a great road . Most towns of any size have bypasses around them . 129 is
a good ride but I prefer 441 . Some of 441 is 4 lane with a 65 mph speed limit .
The most you'll see traffic wise can be in Athens , but as long as you take the bypass
it's not too bad . 2 lane road from Lake City FL to Dublin GA . Most of the 4 lane is after
Dublin . Dublin is a pretty good stopping point if you're taking more than 1 day . The
Quality Inn there is always clean & they always let me park out front under cover in
front of the cameras . Watch for deer . If I can be of any help let me know . Be ready
for lots of traffic in Helen .
441 up is not a bad ride. You can hit 129 in Lake city for awhile then get back on 441. Alot of it is wooded two lane in south Ga. I am in Douglas, Ga. we have a couple nice hotels, chain restaurants and some good mom and pops to eat at. May be a good stopping point if you need. Were about 4 hrs from Tampa. An easy run, have done it a bunch.

Thank you Mikey 1450 - appreciate your information. Brass Town Bald sounds like a good place to see!!!

Thank you Leadman - didn't even think of the deer!?!? I grew up in PA and lived there until I moved to FL 21 years ago. Deer were always part of the equation there but not so much here where I'm at in FL. Have to get that mind-thought back for the ride!!! Appreciate the information on the route.

Thank you Kozmo - Mom and Pop eateries are always the best. I'll sure be looking for them as my break points. All those high-paid dietitians tell you to eat SEVERAL small meals throughout the day. I've always obliged on the SEVERAL but seem to miss the SMALL!!! Appreciate the information on the route.
