From Detroit to Phoenix
Thinking of riding my ‘08 RKC from home in Detroit area to Phoenix AZ. Will take up to a week for this one-way trip. Plan to keep bike in Phoenix area to ride this coming Winter. Plan is to start out from SE Michigan in mid-Sept. Will be riding solo. Has anyone rode from from Midwest to Phoenix in mid-Sept. I would like to try to limit the time I spend on the interstate highways. Also, taking camping gear to camp at least some of the nights.

I've done it both way, piece of cake, although I started in Palm Springs Ca and ended in Oscoda Mi. There are so many amazing things to see along the way it would seriously take a year if you checked out everything. I am not an interstate guy myself. One of the best kept secrets as far as I am in concerned is the Lincoln Highway, very "motor" historic. I could go on and on. You are going to love it as most schools have started and the HOT weather will have broken.

It's still quite hot in Phoenix in September, and it's the tail end of our monsoon season. It's not likely you'll get caught in a monsoon storm, but daily temps are still over 100° through about mid-October. So be prepared for some heat, at least in Phoenix. The rest of your trip should be very nice, if not a bit on the cool side in some areas.

Mid Sept? The temp may be more to your liking if you pushed your trip out a month. Mid Oct is ideal. Not cold yet and traffic is greatly reduced.
You're going to LOVE riding in the Wintertime in Arizona. Look for Hwy 89A (Prescott to Flagstaff) and also the Jerome area for fantastic roads. I'd avoid Phoenix if possible.
