Planning a trip from Pa to Calif and back next year, 2015. What is a good time of year to pull this off and stay out of the extreme heat and extreme weather ? Plan is to go down middle of the country , Kentucky , Missourri, Colorado, Utah, Nevada into Cali. then take the southern route back home, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Lousiana, Mississippi then north back home. Just trying to pick a good time of year to pull this off.
Depends on what you want to see. Summer is blazing hot but months like April and October are really nice and green. Supposed to be in the triple digits this week.
Because of other commitments and the fact we are going to try to hook up with friends in Las Vegas may force us to try this in the August / September time frame. Wife has to possibly break up her vacation at or around her anniversary date to have enough to last . She only gets 4 weeks and may have to take 2 from 1 years and 2 from the next years allotment. This of course really ties us into mid August but may have to look at alternatives like leave of absence etc if necessary to stay out of the extremely hot weather. She has asthma so I would like to stay out of the bad heat as much as possible.
On a side note we did Sturgis in 2012 in July and the heat in that area was not bad at all that time of year. Just don't know how much worse it will be farther west and a bit later in the year.
I live in Ca and my sister lives in Vegas, brother you are going to hit both of the most western states in the hottest time of the year.July through September is HOT! You will be hitting the TRIPLE DIGESTS for sure.
Calif. is only really hot in the valley and desert. If ya stay mostly on the coast or mountains, where the good riding is, summer won't be bad at all. Nevada, Arizona, Southern Utah, New Mexico; now that's a different story! Problem with your northern route is there is snow in the Rockies and Sierras into June many years. Good luck!
