It's been a while since we did our trip and we found out a few things. Here's what we ended up packing and how it all worked out. All is plus what we were wearing. We ended up doing just under 7000 miles in 19 days, we had to cut our trip short when we were in California because of a family death. We rode 3000 miles home in 5 1/2 days with terrible winds which was not fun. My arms and wrists (I'm a retired mechanic with joint issues) were so sore when we got home I ended up buying a Road Glide. I gave up fighting the faring.
* 2 extra jeans, would wear jeans 2 days and wash, we usually ended up washing more out of convenience than necessity which was a bit more often.
* 4-5 extra shirts, underwear and socks.
* heated jacket (only ended up using it 2 times at the top of mountains in Colorado. We never plugged them in because weather was crazy hot. We had 3 days over 100* and the rest we in the mid 90's. We have since bought cool vests for this. The vests were only about $50 each and you wet them every 2 hours. We haven't tried them yet.
* Mesh jackets, we use these all the time no matter the temps.
* Rain suits, gloves, face protection.
* Bathroom supplies, meds, sun screen and phone etc.
* We brought a small cooler but it ended up being in the way so we sent it home. For some reason we also send home our swimsuits which we will not do this year.
* Shorts, flip flops, tennis shoes for wearing when not on the bike.
We are going to do it again this year because we didn't get north of San Francisco and would like to do the northern states into Oregon, Washington and then head east across the northern states. Best decision we made was having zero agenda. We'd find the next stop or stops, and head out in that direction. We'd take a late lunch and find a place to stay depending on how far we wanted to ride, the weather, how we felt etc. There were things that we thought we would need, but everything was very casual so they will not take up space this trip. We plan on going in June across the middle of the country and then head north. Ride safe and have fun....
