Looking at my account it does not appear there is an option to turn off automatic renewals. Your best bet is to change the credit card number to something that won't go through or see if you can remove it
I use SPOT rather than a phone app because I am often in places with no cell coverage and because I am required to run one for the Iron Butt Rally.
Their new device supposedly lets you have a monthly service, but a friend of mine bought one a few months ago and it was having problems so he went back to a Gen III. Delorme has one where you can have a monthly service. No idea if either of these automatically renews or not as I have not used them.
Another option is to use the cell phone for tracking and purchase a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB). They run around $275 and would be for emergency use only and would only provide the SOS feature of the SPOT device. That may be an option if your riding is only occasionally in areas where there is no cell coverage
And lastly, the best site I have found for sharing and viewing your tracks is Spotwalla.com. The developer is a rider in the long distance community and the site is free. You can sync multiple devices to it and pick which one you want to use when setting up a trip. The site also gives you a link to share if you want friends and family to follow along

Thanks for that information. I am thinking that maybe a pre-paid credit card would be the ticket, and if there isn't enough money on the card, I won't be charged another year. I have never bought a pre-paid credit card, and wonder whether one is any better than another. Any suggestions?

They intentionally don't make it easy to find, but there is an option to turn off the automatic renewals on the website.

I checked their help section and found this:
Please see the SPOT Terms and Conditions for all subscription details. All plans auto renew with the credit card used at service activation on file with no previous notice. This occurs 12 months after your service activation for 1-year plans or 24 months after your service activation for 2-year plans. All plans renew on a year-to-year basis.
The solution is simple. Live beyond your means and keep your credit card maxed out. That way the charge will be denied

Well that is one way to defeat the auto renewal feature. However, I will continue to investigate the prepaid credit card.
I signed up for a year's service using my credit card, but only after reading the fine print. It reads that the service will automatically renew, but if you want to cancel your subscription, you must notify them in writing at least 30 days prior to the anniversary date, ie date you signed up. So I will keep an eye on it and hopefully will write them to cancel my service, unless of course, I decide to go on another trip.
I've been using Spotwalla and SW Connect for the ride we are currently on. It's free and logs to the Spotwalla to pass along to friends and family. Just have to ensure the app is running before you go. I had a SPOT, never activated it when they wanted $100 a year for the service.

Anyhow- just a suggestion.

More like double that. My service cost me $211.99 for one year to be exact.
So she got you a tracker, now she knows when your getting close to home. Just saying

Came very close to needing the "SOS" feature last year, could have been a lifesaver had things gone just a little different.
They will sign you up for automatic renewals, but it's not a big deal to cancel it. I just renewed mine, mostly because I know there will be no cell coverage of some of the places I ride. But, for a lot of people, a cell phone app would cover pretty much everywhere they go.
