Yes sir, good tip as I have done that as well, id your hands shake like mine pick up a cheap funnel while your in there. To keep your hands oil free I usually have a few pairs of those nitril gloves in my tool bag or just grab some gloves at the gas station pump when you fill up!

My buddy just put in a new battery, I am replacing mine next month. My buddy likes to carry one of those lithium-battery jumper boxes, as his bike has had its fair share of electrical bugs over the many years of our rides (his is a '96 FLHP).

Love the Wal-Mart idea. Very convenient! I think we just may have a winner here. But I'll carry my filter, as it's hard to find the K&N one for our Harley at most non-Harley shops. And I have extras in my garage. Its worth the extra buck or two for the turkey pan too, since we'll be doing two bikes. And it can catch the brake cleaner spray from the front of the engine under the oil filter.

I've never found a way to change the filter without making a mess. Darn Harley engineers, they should have found a way to mount the oil filter vertically. So much less messy that way.

My bud and I can share a 5 quart Mobil 1 15w50 synthetic and one extra quart, if needed, from Wal Mart, Cheap and will work just fine.

A few years ago I did a multi-state cross country road trip when the oil needed changing, I went to a local dealership in Rogers, AR. Got the oil change, a new shirt and they washed the bike. Hell, the bike wash was worth the money, let alone the oil change. I highly suggest you let someone else do the oil change, use the time to do something locally.

 

For what it's worth my local Walmarts carry the K&N oil filter. In chrome & black. In the motorcycle accessories section.
I was going to say to use the 5 qt oil bottle as an oil catch, but it's full at that time. LOL
I have used an extra I had before. Laying it flat on its side after cutting a large opening.

 

David - post about your ride on HSOA, too. Some of our Springer buds will probably offer up accommodations. If you guys get close to DFW, give a shout. You're welcome to overnight here - food, refreshing beverages, and oil change assistance included.

I can only remember changing or having my oil changed three times in all of my years of touring.

When I went to AK in 2000 (on a new 2000 UC) I had a "full service" done on my bike and they had a porter wash and wax it when they were doe servicing it! The porter came in to the showroom and asked who the UC belonged to and when I raised my hand he said "that's the dirtiest motorcycle I've ever washed'!

As someone else stated, the wash (and wax) was well worth the cost of the oil change/service and they even offered me a "loaner" if I wanted to go somewhere while my bike was being worked on but I opted to sit around and "rest-up" after many days of being cold, wet and tired.

I wanted to wash it more often but at that time, there wasn't a lot of spray washes along the way and we had 5, solid days on the ride up.

I had that bike until the spring of '13 and I swear there was still some traces of silt in some of those "can't-get-to" crevices!
