Will be coming out of the Smokies to Charleston on our way back to Fl. Planning on 2 days, because of August heat,pm t-storms, unknown weather, etc. Thinking that after 2 wks of back roads and mountain twisties we will make a quick run out of Smokies so. on I-26 to somewhere tween Greenville and Cloumbia(maybe stop around Newberry 1 st day)? Then take the senic route on into Charleston getting in noonish. We are looking for info on country rt into Charleston and if anyone has a nice route out of Smokies that would be great also. As I mentioned after 2 wks of techinal roads might be nice to have something easier. With exception of interstate out of Smokies everything looks like 60-80 miles of endless twisties. Thanks for any help. Also anyplace unusual or interesting to stop the firstnite in that general area would be great.
Luke, thanks for offer to help. Leaving out of Waynesville area. Was planning on taking Blueridge back to I-26. So. to Newberry to pick up a little time and take 121 into Saluda then 178 into Charleston. As I recall/figure it is about 2.5 hr ride to Interstate about 1.5 hr to Newberry and .5 to Saluda. With a stop in Hendersonville for lunch and a little shopping for the girls puts us in Saluda by 4 pm.. How's my claculations? I could take 121 down to 19 and into Aiken then pick up 78 into Charleston, which one is nicer, easier ride? Any other optionsto south side of Ashville? do not likethe interstatefrom Newport to south sideof Ashville. Any goodplace for the night in the Newberry-Aiken area? Something to see or do after stopping-for evening. Tx Lee
Your calculations look about right. Just a lot of small SC towns and farm land. Not bad riding though. I ride that way in winter months. I usually hit the mountains when the weather is hot. Some of the little towns are unique. Watch out for the small town police. They love to set up speed traps.
276 down to Brevard is not a bad ride. Take a left where you come out of Pisgah Forest and that road will carry you to I-26. Or you can follow 64 down to Hendersonville. 121 to Saluda is not bad. Lot of farm land. Don't know of much to do in Aiken. You can cross the river into Augusta and there is a lttle more to do. As I remember there are a few hotels in Aiken.
