RE: Information Requested: Sault Ste. Marie to Duluth
ORIGINAL: JR Indy
I"m a newbie, planning a similar trip, sometime in August. Travelling from Indianapolis, solo. May see you out there. Looking for any other input to this trip.
You never know, we might bump into each other. It will probably be around 20 Aug before I get up to the Soo. Hope you have a great trip!
RE: Information Requested: Sault Ste. Marie to Duluth
I just got back from doing the trip around the lake last week. I have made the trip the last 12 years in a row, The roads are great! Plenty of places to stop for gas, both in Minnesota, and in Canda. You should have no problem going across the border either direction, does make it easier if you have a passport though! The scenery is outstanding, make sure you take a camera! About 40 mile west of Sualt Ste Marie is a great trading post to stop at, They have some of the best fresh smoked lake trout around. Wawa is a great place to overnight, small little town, If you stay at the Wawa Moter Inn ask to stay in there lower log cabin rooms, or for around $130.00 you can get a log cabin to stay in with fireplace and full kitchen. Enjoy you trip, I found after I did it the first time, I keep going back every year, just keep adding more days to the trip to enjoy some of the side roads. If you need any information let me know.
Ps. There are some great bars in the Soo, they people are great and they have awsome beer! Great looking ladies also!

Reddog:
We are leaving on the 3Aug. Will be in Soo on 5Aug, then Marathon, Grand Marais, Copper Harbor, *******. Sound reasonable? Doesn't look like much to in Marathon...............
Thanks.
RE: Information Requested: Sault Ste. Marie to Duluth
Never stayed in Marathon, just stopped there for gas, small town, don't know about any place to stay, If you wanted to go about 60 more miles you could look at staying in Terrace Bay, alittle bigger town, more places to stay and more to do at night! Enjoy the ride, the scenery is unbealivable!
RE: Information Requested: Sault Ste. Marie to Duluth
Well, I took this trip. Had a great time. Did an Iron Butt SS1000 run from Enterprise, Al up to Grayling, MI at night in order to beat the heat. It was just under 1100 miles in 18 hours. Spent the day and night there resting and then continued up over the Mackinac Bridge and into Ontario Province, Canada. Rode to Wawa the first day. Hwy 17 is beautiful. Froze my butt off with temps in the 50's and rain. Next day headed for Thunder Bay with overcast sky and temps in the 40's when I left. Froze again. Hit rain halfway to Thunder Bay. Now cold and wet. Hit road construction with stretches of gravel. Now cold, wet and PO'd. Got to Thunder Bay to find more construction and decided to head for the border. Loved Hwy 61 down to Duluth. blew thru Duluth and went on down intoMN. Was makinggood time until the deer started to cross in front of me at which time I decided to find the nearest motel. Happened to be in Spooner, MN...nice placeto spend the night. Got to St Louis, MO the next day and then on home to Alabama the day after that. Back into the brutal heat we've been having. Drank water constantly underway to avoid dehydration.Turned out to be just under 3200 miles in five days. Had a great ride and wouldn't trade a minute of it.......even the wet ones. Or the cold/hot ones. That's all part of it. The Ultra makes rides like this easy. Turn on the XM radio, program the GPS, set the cruise control and relax. I'm not even unpacked yet and I am already thinking about my next ride. Life is good.
Thanks to those who volunteered information about the route, it was much appreciated.
