We went a few years ago and rented a condo in Driggs Idaho, cheaper than Jackson. Went up the west side of the Tetons to Yellowstone, road runs along the Snake River, big trout fishing area. Went into Jackson see the sights, also went to Rexburg Idaho to bear world, interesting.
We stayed in little cabins in West Yellowstone. We liked it. Plenty of bars and restaurants in walking distance.
We hit the west gate at 6 or 7AM - whenever they open. We were pretty much all alone on our entire ride through the park. Stopped a few places here and there, like Old Faithful. We pretty much just spent the day riding through.
Last September we stayed at the Quality Inn in Red Lodge, MT after coming from Glacier NP. We then rode up Beartooth and through Yellowstone in one day, only stopping for a few sights like Old Faithful. Came out through Jackson and made it to Logan, UT. Long day but a great time.
Cody is a long ride in. I would not stay there again. Gardner and Cooke City not bad, but staying in the park is nice. Got motel like duplex room, and was not that expensive. YS is one of my favorites. been there twice. Accessible to the public. Easy to pull over and park, places to park and walk short distance. Lots of pull overs.

I have tent camped in Cody at Ponderosa CG. It was nice. But it is two hours on a motorcycle to the lower loop of YS. It is a beautiful ride. I have camped at Canyon CG in YS a couple of times. It is nice and they handle campers. Numerous CG in YS. West YS has CG's and it is close to the park.

From one Hoosier to another, this is without a doubt one of the best RV parks we've ever stayed in https://yellowstonesedgervpark.com/, however it's not cheap, but very well taken care of. This area of Montana is AMAZING with great fishing. If you decide to give it a try I recommend eating here at least once http://www.wildflourbakerymt.com/
