Default Yellowstone Advice

Hey all I'm thinking about visiting Yellowstone next year.
So I'm looking for advice...

Where to stay? (stay in park or out?)
What to do?
Nearby things to do?
Good time of year to go?
Etc.

Probably plan on 1-2 full days there before moving on. I don't really know how much time we might need or want.
Don't think we will want to stay in our own tent, but I'm not 100% on that. I don't know that I would be able to talk the Ol' Lady to camp in bear town...

We're coming from Boise by the way. Don't know if that will make a heck of a lot of difference.

TIA!

Two places to stay out of the park are West Yellowstone and Cody.... I prefer Cody, more to do in the town. If your camping take warm sleeping bags... I like A Western Rose in Cody for a Mom &Pop Motel & Motorcycle Friendly place, but reserve early.... as you can see on a map it’s a nice figure 8... so one 0 one day, the second the next.... slow moving traffic, and watch for Buffalo on the road..... take $$, nothing inexpensive in the area.... the ride down to Jackson is spectacular..... and out of Cody you can do a loop up to Red Lodge, over the Beartooth and back via Chief Joseph..... it your continuing on East out of Cody 14a is the road to go on..... next year is Sturgis’s 80 th, so if you go around then, expect lots of bikes.

Been there twice the week after Labor Day ( kids back in school ). Agree with what Rocky has said, Jackson Hole and Cody are great places to stay. I will be one of the ones out there for Sturgis next year ., Gonna hang in Rapid City for 3 days to see all the landmarks and then we are heading to Cody and Red Lodge for a few days and then back towards Buffalo, Wy and back to Rapid City. My advice on the park is to get to the gates early and get in front of all the RV's that are being driven by people that have never driven an RV before.....

Thats a good point..... I would also suggest getting a yearly National Park Pass before you get there... that way you can get into the prepaid line... I made that mistake this year, and waited A long time to get through the gate... and the prepaid line moved through quickly.

yep, avoid summer, early morning and late evenings, wildlife is said to be better then as well as less humanoids. We hit it once right after a thunderstorm and had very few other people. Some of the areas mid day summer time are crazy packed with people. Took us 15 minutes to get out of an area once with people waiting for parking... just a mess.

Check for construction areas on roads. More Grizzlies down in Teton area.

We were up there a couple of years ago. We spent 2 days in the park and it definitely wasn't enough time. We did stay at Gardiner and it was OK for a location.

Thank you for the advice so far guys!

I was looking at the Park Pass. 80 bucks & it'll get our 2 bikes in. It looks like it's $30 per bike so it would be $60 at the gate anyway. Seems like a good extra $20 spent for any others we might make it to, or even if it means a shorter line to get in.

How would late June be? Is that too close to the 4th of July? Planning bike trips to these type of areas is always difficult for weather. Not to mention trying to avoid crowds. Done trips to places that are cool so we've gone in the middle of summer. Resulting in 100°+ temps on the ride to & from.

Our first time ther we took the guided tour of the ring of fire, it was definitely worth it, then we toured ourselves.

we were there this past July, and stayed in the Old Faithful Snow Lodge. It was nice to be in the park, and the lodge was nice. Touring the park on motorcycles was awesome, but, watch for wildlfe and stupid people.

Late June is good.... there is no time in the park when it isn’t busy except when it is dark

We went in mid June, stayed in a cabin at Yellowstone lake for 4 nights. Get up early in the Park and not many people around. Same deal in the evening most people get headed out. This was 5 Years ago so maybe things have changed.
