Default Sturgis 2020

Hey,
New member to the forum, but have been reading for the last year!! My buddy and I are heading to Sturgis next year for our first time, leaving from Minneapolis on 8/6 and leaving Sturgis on 8/15 or 8/16, as of now thinking of taking US 212 all the way out and coming back 90 to hit the Badlands etc. A couple of questions....(1) Any suggestions where to stay on the way out, looking at about 6-7 hours of riding the first day. (2) Would you reverse the trip for any reason? (3) Any certain days that we should do anything, rides etc. while out there?
Thanks for any advice and information, can't wait for August!!

All depends on how long you are gonna be out there. We are gonna spend 3 days in the area seeing that part of the country and then head to Cody for 2 nights. Yellowstone, Beartooth Pass, Chief Joesph Highway, Bighorn mountains. We aren't going for the rally...

It depends if you want to do more riding or partying! Lots of great riding out west and further out you get from Rapid City, the better it gets. Last time we rode to the rally from VA, we rode straight to Wisconsin and then the second day, rolled into rapid city at a decent time. 1800 miles in 2 days. Minnesota is pretty close to Sturgis, you should be able to do it in one day.

600 miles from Minneapolis to Sturgis taking 90, easily done in a day. You won't see anything from 212 that you won't see from 90.

I"ve been going to Sturgis every year since 2005. There is something for everyone there so it all depends what you want to see and do.

I'm from Nebraska and it's a long one day ride for me. The journey is half the fun so you can spend a night somewhere along the way, or ride it in one day and get there by taking the fastest route. The speed limit on I-90 is 80 MPH. You might consider riding to Wall South Dakota the first day and staying there for the night. Ride the Badlands the next day and then ride into Sturgis. It will break up your trip and it's on the way. I've learned it's better to see everything on the way there instead of wait until you are ready to go home. You will be tired and all you will want to do is get home and you won't enjoy the ride as much.

You will love riding the Black Hills. It will take you a week to see and do everything you want to do there. If you have questions, let me know. I can give you suggestions on things to see and do if you don't already have a plan.

This is the 80th Anniversary so there will be a big crowd. I would recommend getting reservations as soon as possible wherever you plan to stay.

Have fun, and ride safe.

If I was to give anyone advice about Sturgis it would be to go the week before the Rally and leave on Sunday or Monday the week of the rally. That is if you are the riding type more than the party type. All the good roads turn into a parking lot the week of the rally. All the rally stuff starts the weekend before so you would still get some of that. If you are going to party then I wouldn't even ride. The riding during the rally week is an absolute miserable affair. All streets and roads are very slow moving, not much fun at all. I went 2 years ago and my buddy and I ran spearfish canyon at an average speed of 70 MPH. Do that same run during the rally and you will be lucky to average 20 mph.

I live in Watertown. Choose your route based on your riding style. If you like 80 for hours take I90. If not take 212. Scenery is about the same. Options for stops is about the same. 212 is pretty nice now and has been redone in many places. Completely new from MN border to Watertown, was redone going west several years ago. It is a nice ride, more hills and such taking 212 but nothing that you won't get plenty of once you get there anyway.

212 requires slowing down for all the little towns and you have traffic to deal with whereas I90 you can manage a steady pace of your choosing. both are around 9.5 hrs drive time.

I used to live in Sioux Falls and would use the angle route between Worthington-Mankato-Cities when I went back and forth. Sioux Falls would be a good halfway stop with lots of lodging and dining options and a very cool dealership with nice folks that is also an official pin stop if you are into that. Otherwise Watertown is about 4.5-5 hours on 212 and is your biggest option for lodging and dining on the entire route through SD on 212. Once you get west of Watertown everything gets smaller.

Damn son. Where in Va did you leave from? I am heading to Ca next spring from Va. Plan on maybe 400 miles a day. Even in my 20s i left from Colorado and got to Va in 2 1/2 days. That was 10 hours a day riding hard all day. Except gas and a toke stop. I rode. My hands were in the throttle position at the end ofbthe second day. Hats off to you sir!

On 212 once you get W of Faith I don't think there's a gas stop or hotel for 100 miles.Plan well and don't miss gassing up there.
