I rode to Sturgis from Gainesville Ga to Sturgis in 2016 and 2018. In 16 I rode solo with a group of 2 other couples. We went rally week. Stayed in Best westerns going and coming but camped at Glencoe while there (not again). In 2018 I rode 2 up with 2 other couples and went the week before the rally and stayed at BW in Spearfish. I highly recommend getting a Best Western Ride Rewards card and stay only in best westerns. You build points towards free rooms and you will get gift cards for some stays. Its a beneficial tool.
We drive fairly hard and drove it both times in about 2 1/2 days. 750 miles 2 day both trips. I recommend staying at Spearfish. Book the SD rooms now so you get a good rate. With the card you can cancel up til 4 that day.
Do Needles Hwy, Iron Mountain road, Crazy Horse, Mt Rushmore, Hullet Wyoming, Devils Tower, Custer State Park, Deadwood, Keystone, Hill City, and Whatever you do, do not skip the Badlands. Catch it on your way in or out, as its quiet a ways from Sturgis or the black hills.
If you need any pointers message me. I’ll be glad to help. Heres my logs for both years.
What's the deal with Glencoe? I was thinking about staying there this year for the shade.

Its not bad if you are there to party. We were more there for the riding. When we would come back into town after riding all day, it took forever to get to our tents through the chaos. Theres also a dragstrip right behind the campground thats loud. It rained everyday at least once, so it was just a muddy mess. I figured it up and paid about the same for my hotel in Spearfish in 2018 as I did to camp and everything that I had to bring. I did book that hotel about a year in advance. I shipped some stuff home and got raped on shipping rates. I guess Im getting old but Im about done tent camping on bike trips that are over a night or two.

Thanks for the tip. I like to party but I like to hit the bed around 2am so I can get up and ride all day. Camped at the chip last year and had no complaints other than the no shade thing. The chip seemed really tame after the main concerts were over.

I have camped at Glencoe since 2005. In my opinion it's a great place to camp. Lots of shade trees and great party. The alley will be wild this year since it's the 80th Anniversary if the weather is good. I would recommend getting there the first weekend if you want to experience the best of Glencoe. People will start rolling in the weekend before to get their campsite set up on the alley. The party starts the week before the rally and Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday nights will be the best. People start leaving the Wednesday of the rally to go home so the last part of the week is very slow and by the last weekend it's dead. Lots of great people and friends camp there, and if you want to have a great time, I would high recommend it.

I got my week pass for the chip all week. Can you get day passes at Glencoe to check out the party? I like to be in the middle of the rowdiness (burnouts, etc) late at night and buffalo chip was lacking that
