Beartooth and Chief Joseph are awesome, had great weather passing through last year, July 2nd, two years before, Beartooth was closed in June due to snow, Chief joseph was open, but it was raining/sleeting some.
At that elevation in Montana anything can happen. Wide variety from the day to day and year to year. Took these pictures on July 28th, 2016. Dressed for cool weather and it ended up being close to 90 degrees Summit Parked at the summit. Half way up scenic stop
This thread has me motivated to take a detour while in Sturgis this year.
Not to hijack the thread but regarding some of the better riding in that area, could anyone suggest a route or some must travel roads that can be covered in a day or a day and a half? I would only have about 1.5 days to stay there and want to maximize my time, if it's worth the ride out.
It's going to take you a day to get there and a day to get back to Sturgis. Yellowstone is close and you can ride around Yellowstone if you have never been there. Jackson Hole and the Tetons are cool and great riding but that is going to take you farther down south. We like to ride I-90 to Sheridan then take 14A thought the Bighorns into Cody, Wyoming. Ride Chief Joseph Highway to Highway 212 and Beartooth Pass into Red Lodge, Montana. You can ride it back the other direction and come back the same way on I-90. Always get a different view when you ride something the other way in my opinion. If you want to stay on Highway 212 you can take that back into Belle Fourche and Sturgis.

Chief Joseph and Beartooth are worth the trip.
This is the route we will be taking also. This year on the way back from Red Lodge when we get to Greybull we are gonna head south to Worland then over the mountains to Buffalo where we have reservations.

I'm just outside of Omaha in Gretna.
Thanks for the route. I planned a day out and day back when I ran everything through mapquest. With my my current timeline I would be able to dedicate one full day there, utilizing lodging in Cody.
