A couple of years ago I was there after Sturgis and road Beartooth. The next week it was closed for a day due to snow. Warm weather gear and rain gear are a must. My first time out there crossing the Bighorns it was raining and sleeting.

hello biker man

I am from Louisiana and have rode this trip several times, last year was the last time. It is too much information to type but if you want to give me a call i would be more than glad to share my riding riding experiences through this beautiful country with you. 225-978-4031 anytime during the day. I am heading your way in march, off to Daytona again.

Last July we got heat, rain, cold, and a bit of spitting snow, along with awesome views all the way, no matter the weather.

The Western Rose in Cody is awesome.

We'll definitely stay again.

Leathers, gloves, hats, rain gear and helmets were with us during our Beartooth journey.....we used them all, but returned to a tank top before ending back in Cody.

I went through Beartooth a number of times on my way to Sturgis. One year there was snow along the road at the top. A heated vest would take care of you in most days during Sturgis... but that same year I was chased by a bad hailstorm through Yellowstone. It can be over 100 one day in Sturgis and freezing the next at the top of Beartooth.

I always take emergency light weight rain gear and a tarp and a heated jacket liner.

On a nice day you can see an epic view!

Beartooth Pass is incredible. We are staying at the https://alpineredlodge.com in Red Lodge. Mom and Pop motel with cabins that are very clean. See website attached. Owners are great people.

We plan to take Highway 212 from Sturgis to Red Lodge. Will ride Beartooth Pass and then Chief Joseph Highway to Cody, Wyoming. Then take 14A on the way back to Sturgis. This will take you through The BigHorn National Park into Sheridan, Wyoming. Then pick up I-90 back to Sturgis. Nice big loop.

Enjoy your trip. You are in for a treat.

Ate some really good Mexican food in Red Lodge a few years ago. It was in a school bus then with tables outside. I understand they have a building now.

My question is what kind of clothes, gear am i going to need riding over the pass? how cold does it get? will there be snow on the road......etc? and any advise would be appreciated.

We did it last year and loved it. Stayed in Cody, rode up Chief Joseph HWY and the beartooth pass. During Sturgis we are talking about August. I just wore my leathers but as others have mentioned you should be prepared for anything.

It snowed enough for the plows to get stuck and for them to close the highway about 2 weeks before that. A friend of mine got trapped on the wrong side of the gates during the Iron Butt Rally

Some places along the road had 10'-12' tall banks where the snow had drifted, must have been from that recent storm because it didn't look like old compacted snow. There was a ski hill still open and operating up top there, with skiers and snowmobiles running around. Would have been nice for better weather to get some decent views, but it was interesting nonetheless. Might have to hit it again but later in the summer next time I suppose.

She's a long ride from northern Alberta. We were well prepared for any weather, great ride and highly recommended. We went from Red Lodge that morning and then to Cody, and through west Yellowstone to Gardiner MT where we spent the night. Was a crazy long day due to the insane amount of traffic in the park. Lesson learned.
