US2 is a great way to cross the northern plains. One end is at I 75 near Ignace MI, the other in Everett WA at I 5. I have ridden it all. The ride along the shoreline of Lake Michigan is a great start. Then through the woods of the UP. I recommend a side trip to see the ski flying hill at Iron Mountain. Those guys are crazy! Yes, there may be headwinds across ND and MN, you would get that on the
Interstate too. Across the prairies much of US2 follows a river valley, so not as deadly boring as the Interstate. And as the mountains start to rise up in the distance... so good. A great choice....enjoy.
if your planing to enter Glacier National Park from the east the Blackfeet Indian Reservation Is closed to the public hwy 2 and Going to the Sun highway.
They do not want pale face Sickness. Yeah as say earlier Plan your fuel stops. Not many gas stations in the indian reservations, many with no High octane fuel.
Have a nice ride
US 2 is a fun ride. We made this trip the last week of August 2020 and the weather was good. Gotta love the methane stench of the oil fields in North Dakota. It was very hot between Rugby ND and Glacier. Had to fuel up with 87 octane once as stated above, gas stations are iffy in that stretch. Going To The Sun road was fairly busy with tourists, but not terrible. Go early in the day. Absolutely beautiful. We rode in and out of the west end of Glacier because the Indians shut the road down on the east entrance as stated above.
Well the trip never happened last year . Broke my left knee in august , so again we are planning this may , thru the south up thru the rockies and then glacier then US 2 to michigan . Planning to see as many parks in the south west and the rockies !! This was planned 2 years ago , but wife had medical issues , so we put it off for a year .then cover then broken knee , so now this may !! We planned either middle of may or middle of august ( thanks to all on the forum that helped plan when to go ) Hope about 6 weeks and $ 300.00 a day .
Route 2 is beautiful, except through eastern Montana and western North Dakota. Not bad, just straight and not a lot to see. I enjoyed it, my wife 2 up hated it. Of course, it was on our way back from Sturgis and it was 100F+. Like someone said above, be happy with 87 gas, and you will not have any fueling issues.
Once into Glacier, through Idaho and Washington, 2 is gorgeous.
Using 200 south of 2 for ND and Eastern Montana is a much more interesting ride, and premium is available at all stops. But, it is slower as there are a few more towns and better motels.
If I'm not mistaken, one of the more recent issues of HOG magazine had a write up about someone making that trip on a sportster. Looks like a great ride.
