Years ago, in a car, we left Bremerton WA looking for a room. Lavender Fest... drove almost 100 miles before success

Where I am staying for this week while I am working back in Cranbrook BC… $90 US all in a night and not a **** hole, lots of vacancies… Of course the border is still closed, so that’s going to hurt the occupancy rate

Prices are up and availability is down for sure. That said I came down the coast from Raymond, WA to Reedsport, OR before cutting inland over the Fourth of July weekend and I saw plenty of vacancy signs in some of the smaller non-destination towns. I like to make reservations in advance, but I wouldn't let that be a deal-breaker for me. I would feel pretty safe just booking a day in advance or the morning of, but I would also plan to just blow through the coastal towns in reach of Portland, especially on the weekends. If you want to stay at places with an ocean view in resort towns like Astoria, Seaside and Newport be ready to shell out $ and forget it without advance reservations.

Anytime booking a site on the west coast, with STATE CAMPGROUNDS or parks, use https://www.reserveamerica.com. Thats what we use. Sites, prices and availability are all at your fingertips. No excuses. As mentioned, summertime, even for us locals, spots are hard to come by. When I planned my trip to Red Lodge, this year, I had reservations, to, while there, and on the way home. Nearly every place I stayed, said they were booked solid. That was CA, NV, ID, and MT. I tent camped to and from, and the most expensive spot was about $42. Pricey for a tent, but my friends, that came from WA were spending almost $250 a nite for hotels. That would have added $1,000 to my trip. No thanks. Four spots, in 4 diff nite, cost me under $150.

Its all in the planning. I usually got on the road around 6am and stopped for breakfast around 9, then ate again when I stopped for the evening. I also would load up on gatorade, when I got gas. Temps in the SAC, or SCK (sacramento, stockton) area hit 109* on the ride to, and 107* on the way home.

You must not have camped in Stockton.
You wouldn’t be posting if you had.

You got that right. All I wanted to do was get thru there. We have, however camped there in our 5th wheel. On the inland waterway. Nice little niche in the area.

I made reservations on my way to The badlands, Jackson, red lodge, deadwood. Then winged it from there. No issues so far. Expensive but I’m not sleeping in roach hotel. Made tonight’s reservation for Walla Walla Washington about 70 miles before getting here. Wasn’t sure what route I was taking back, depended on monsoons, heatwave and fires. So I was open to different route backs as needed. Been working so far and that included 3 nights near glacier National park. Which is busy.
