Default Phoenix Directions

Going to ride from Congress through Prescott to Sedonaheaded to the Grand Canyon. We will be coming up from the south. Can anyone tell me the best way to get to Congress from south of Phoenix? Thanks.

Can't say what is the best route for you, but we recently drove to Prescott from SoCal, and we went 60 East, to 71NE, to 89 North. Beautiful drive.

I love Prescott. I'd move there right now (I mean, I'd grab my keys, my wallet, and some beef jerky for the drive kind of 'right now'!) and send folks here to get my ****, but the wife isn't as easily convinced.

I spend a lot of time up there, coming from Mesa I go up 17 to 74. Thru Wickenburg to Congress then up the Yarnells to Prescott. Jerome is worth riding thru on the way to Sedona. Then 89 up the oak creek canyon to Flagstaff.

This ^^^^ Great ride---My Dad lived in the Sun City area for 23 years and I would visit every May for a week or 2 ---this route is amazing on a motorcycle, make sure to stop in each town for a few pics, take your time and enjoy.

When are you planning this trip? Let me know if you want some company! I ride it all the time and love showing off the sights in AZ.

Thanks. We plan to ride it Friday 4/28. Traffic bad going through Phoenix? Might try to stay on the north side in order to get through town on Thursday afternoon.

Keep in mind that Phoenix is the 5th largest city in America (last time I checked anyway), so traffic at rush hours can be horrendous. People tend to speed, and 80 mph is not fast in the diamond lanes. This time of year, we have a lot of winter visitors and ... well ...

That is why I was wondering if we should try to make our way around town vs going through the middle of town.

Hard to go around to the east, big hills in the way. To the west it is possible if you want to take your time. I can post up a few alternatives when I get time to map them out. Not a big problem if not during rush hours but if you don’t normally drive in a big city it could be a shock anytime. Folks are nuts here and I have people flip me off for doing 80 in a 65 zone regularly.

No options without additional miles for going around town. If you are coming up from the south on I10 you can take the Phoenix bypass route using I8 towards Gila Bend and then up Hwy 85 which will add about 35 extra miles, but it is around town. If you want to come into just the edge of the traffic area you can branch off on I202 off of I10 and swing around to the West on 202 and pick up I10 west you will miss most of the town and then the 303 to 60 onto Congress. If at all possible, just avoid the rush hour times and traffic will move along pretty good as long as there are no accidents. The use of the 202 off of I10 out of rush hour moves pretty fast.
