West Kansas on I-70 was always windy... horrible! There's just nothing there to block any wind. I don't think I've ever ridden in worse wind for as many miles as West Kansas.
I've ridden up to Spearfish SD and back thru WY a few times and never had any problems with wind to live up to it's claim of fame. I've had some brutal 50 to 60mph crosswind gusts locally, and boy do those give you pucker factor. Trying to get to the far side of your lane so when it hits it doesn't blow you into the other lane.
An interesting place to ride in the wind is up on the ridge of Rocky Mountain national Park… You’ll be leaning into the wind until a motorhome starts coming towards you and as soon as it gets beside you you have to sit upright, and then lean back over soon as you get to the end of it… A very narrow Road that you do not want to get blown off of, the first step down is a long one.

Its fun reading these stories, been across Kansas, Montana and Wyoming a couple different times, so I know what you guys are talking about. Crossing North Dakota on 2 can be also be real interesting.
I went over a 9,000 ft mountain summit near Price Utah week and a half ago, 2 up, loaded with luggage in a howling storm and 8" of snow on the road. No guard rails, leading the pack, hoping not to hit ice as the temps were dropping. Guess that makes me a real man.
Spent the last week in Montana, Colorado, Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. Spent a LOT of time on 191. Never really noticed the wind, but I am from TX, LOL....

I'm on a long ride out West on the Interstate system and am on the return leg back to Indiana. Yesterday, I had to exit I-80 at Laramie, Wyoming after fighting the wind for about the last 75 miles. Only made 220 out of a planned 400 miles There were electronic wind warning signs on the interstate, "60+ mph cross winds until Tuesday AM". Believe me, it was blowing hard, the worst wind I have ever ridden in.
Any other wind stories from members?
Welcome to Wyoming. I've seen whiteout conditions where snow blows across the road and 10 feet up its blue skies. This happened on my way to Laramie from Centennial WY. Had frost over the weekend in the Snowies. As a fly fisherman, the wind sometimes makes it impossible to fish. The mountains offer some protection from the wind as @Vernal noted, the winds off the Snowies and across the Laramie Plains can be horrific.
I'm kinda used to it since I'm a part time Wyoming resident.
