It takes a special breed of individual to undertake such a ride. I saw these guys as they rode through my hometown a couple of years ago. Pretty cool bikes and some interesting characters for sure!
Who hasn't dreamed of doing a long ride on their bikes? And, watching this begs the question, what KEEPS us from actually doing it?
Checkout the IBA... specifically the IBR. I have a friend that's been in the IBR 3 times and finished. I lost a friend that was struck by a truck competing in his 4th IBR.
The IBR is a true endurance ride, not as much as the Dakar Rally, but it's still grueling.
That's really cool. It's as much about your mechanic skills as it is the ride. It's a cool pipe dream, but I'm guessing you have to be independently wealthy to pull it off. Not only are you away from work for weeks at a time, but you're spending cash like a sailor on leave. Yeah, I dream about getting on the bike and just going .....
The big guy @ :50 is my friend "Harley Joe" Nielsen from Dillon Harley in Omaha. Great guy. Almost traded him a truck for a shovel he has. Kinda wished I'd done it.
I stumbled upon the Motorcycle Cannonball the other day. I retire in April 2025 and my hobby is restoring cars and bikes. I haven't done may of either but enjoy it and that is what I plan to do in retirement. Not for money but for a hobby. I'm intrigued by this rally and I'm thinking, maybe I should find a pre 1934 Harley and do a complete rebuild, then run the Cannonball. Each stage isn't a long ride but will certainly seem longer on a 100 year old motorcycle. I'm keeping this idea in my back pocket in case I run across the right bike as a project.
