Planning Ironbutt trip
The big days usually happen at the beginning or end of a trip, when I'm trying to get somewhere, or home from somewhere. Some people like to Fly and Ride, but I chose to Ride and Ride. It's like two different experiences to Iron Butt from Iowa to Colorado, then flower-sniff for a long weekend, then Iron Butt back home.
Sorry, that was more than you asked, but my coffee was strong this morning.
You got this maxxym. Here are a few things you will not see on the AOW which I would suggest.
Go solo. You will make better time. If you REALLY want to, another chap on a SS is not so bad at all. Again, u have 24 hrs and can do it in less. ALL of the other IBA rides I would suggest solo only.
If u r not an LDRer (LDR = Long Distant Rider) then No matter how good a shape you are in (or not and) there are two things that are going to hurt. Muscle pain it is.
One is your lower back. So if you practice doing the "plank" that will strengthen your back enough that you will get little to no pain. Just do the best you can with the "plank" and you will be fine. It does not take a huge amount of work. Maybe for 10 days straight do the plank the best you can and you should be fine.
The other one is shoulder pain. From keeping your arms up for such a long time. This is how you solve that. If the shoulder pain is on your left side, then move your left elbow down to the left side of your body touching your body. With your head do not turn it. Keep looking forward and move the top of your head the best you can down to your right shoulder. If I remember correctly I have this one correct. My sister-in-law is a physical therapist and she told me both of the above and there like miracles.
Of course my friend maxxym, if the same thing happens on the other side then just reverse everything. Bring your right elbow down to the right side of your body and move the top of your head to your left trying to touch your shoulder the best you can.
The other thing would be your pitstops my friend. Again, I do not think this is in the AOW. I have not read the AOW for quite some time. When you stop for fuel, do the following in this order. 1. Fuel up. 2. Pee. 3. Hydrate.
Staying hydrated is critically important.
Everything I shared with you above should be done under 20 minutes.
While you are hydrating or grabbing a sandwich, walk. When you stop for your pitstop, do not just stand still. It is important that you walk. Get the muscles/blood in your legs going.
You will find this entire process a great deal of fun I am sure.
Make sure you follow the proper paperwork because they are very strict about it.
When you knock off this SS and are planning to do more, let me know and I will share with you several advanced techniques for when they start to get harder. Or as I would like to put my friend, more fun.
Keep in mind also, upon a successful completion (and you will) you will have access to the IBA store where you can get some really cool stuff. Wait a moment, I will show you one of my favorite things.

You will have time to take PIXs. That would be nice. Maybe at the beginning and end? The other timed rides....not so much. You really need to move but SAFETY FIRST!! <-- Always.
It is not speed. Higher speeds burn off fuel too fast and you will have the diminishing returns with a bad fuel burn rate which will sting you badly on time forcing extra stops. Again with the SS, it is not so bad at all. But you want to maintain a good healthy highway speed.
Man, I think I am getting more excited than you. LOL
When are you planning on doing this? And YES, off the top of my mind, those timeframe's look very GOOD!! Good for you......
You just gave me a good idea touchdown. And I mean this seriously, not at all sarcastically, maybe you or someone who has not done an LDR do one with no coaching. See how that turns out for them.
Or maybe touchdown, there is someone here that has already jumped on their bike and knocked off a SS that can share their experience?? Of course, 1 persons reply (good, bad, or indifferent) has little value. We would need maybe
Cool idea eh? Would be neat to know the results.
Speaking from personal experience, I was quite glad I did not "heads up" studying b4 knocking off my 1st SS.
'juss thinking. You bring up a good point mate. Well, IMO at least.
Both SS portions were on Interstate highways with speed limits of 80 mph and I planned fuel stops every 175 miles or close to it.
I take a couple small coolers in the tour pak, one has drinks on ice the other sandwich's, something to warm up at the motel for a late dinner and snacks. When I fill up, if I'm hungry I take a few bites of a sandwich, drink some water and record the receipt and mileage. I don't go in the Station unless I have to. Most stops are 10 minutes or less.
I'm lucky, I usually feel pretty good during and at the end of the ride.
Plenty of food for thought, that's for sure.

I live in the southwest though, so I always have to know where my next two gas stops are. 75 to 100 miles or more between gas stations is common, so I just need adjust accordingly.
