Correct, all newer iphones have a gps chip built in.

Its a preference thang. GPS doesnt require cell service.
Waze is dependent on people reporting those alerts. Both map functions of droid and apple are same as well.
GPS is on and my phone can be used as a phone, when in car. My phone is stowed when I ride.
I like the original way to go somewhere, have an idea its that a way, and go!

Something I am going to try soon that someone mentioned to me...
If you wear a full face and have ear pods, try one in for navigation.
can swap to the other ear bud when that one gets low.
Again, I have not tried it "yet" so I can't say for certain but it is something I "am" going to try in the next few days or so.

Tried it and the air pod wants to fall out. Ymmv.

I have some JBL version.... they don't like the wind. Fit tight in the ear but but sound suffers above 45, 50 mph
I may try your idea on an upcoming all day run. They only last about 3 hours of jamming. I need to try them in my ear covering helmet
